LOL at Mike! So true. Very impressed with at what Howie achieved with a hunk of metal like the fast deer.

Howie, where does the original stock end, and the monte carlo stock begin?

Have any of you figured out a system for filing smooth the main receiver ID? I keep tearing up my sandpaper on all the stamped areas even after filing the burs off.

That is the factory stock what I did was to cut material away and leave the wood to form a monty carlo and roll over cheek plate the only thing I cut off the original stock was about 1 inch just to get a flat end to join the purple heqart forearm on it is doweled as well as epoxyed together as far as working on the metal inside the receiver emery cloth is better lasting than sand paper. and I take a dowel and cut a slot in it for putting sand paper on the dowel this way I can put it on my drill and power sand it kind of flops around. Some times I will use my deep well sockets to wrap sand paper on for sanding curved surfaces like reliveing the fit to the barrel . howie

When I layed out ths stock what I did was to shoulder the rifle as if I was going to shoot it and since it fit good with or without a scope I left the height of the comb alone so in order to get the monty carlo style I drew the check plate on one side of the stock and the roll over on the other  side. this was to not be cut away the rest will be cut away making the lower part of the stock thinner and nicer. also I lengthened and tapered  the fore end of the stock to get away from the heavy feel of the fast deer , I was looking for a new look for the rifle. This is my 2nd fast deer I really like this rifle and the thing is very accurate I don't know what it cronys at but it just feels solid when it go's off. one thing with the trigger mod I do you don't know when it will break it just fires as you squeeze , some of the rifles you can tell about when it is getting close to firing but  not with my deer. why don't the rest of you guys that have deer's put up some pics of how your deer's came howie

It took a few coats of paint stripper to get that finish off, but I'm just about ready to finish it as I have the shape I want. It's my first stock work, so I'm taking it easy.

I just got a FD on monday, and building a compressor now.  This will be my practice subject on minor tuning.  It smoked a ton out of the box but calmed down after about 25 shots.  My chrony showed a range of 634 to 670 fps w/Meisterkugelns (8.2g)  The average over 10 shots was about 643 fps. Im looking forward to see if it can get better.

Jeez, y'all had me seriously thinking about it...

Fast Deer Pistol?
« Reply #55 on: July 08, 2008, 04:21:20 AM »
Has anybody thought about chopping both the barrel and the shoulder stock off, and converting the FD into a pistol? The kick on these is very mild. (apologies to Howie for butchering his image).

Luckily, I pushed the button just before they sold out!
« Reply #56 on: July 08, 2008, 09:11:38 PM »
Hey Guys,

I just received two of these beauties on Monday, and I love the looks of 'em!  Have not had a chance to try them out nor take them apart (never really sure which is supposed to be done first).

Nonetheless, I have a question that some of you more experienced guys may be able to help with -

I'd like to refinish the stocks.  Has anyone had any success removing the stock coating that is applied so liberally over the plastic butt plate??  I'm concerned that ordinary stripper will ruin the plastic.  Your thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Mike

I just take a 4x4 sander and 100 grit paper to the stock leaving the butt plate on this way the butt plate fits perfect , it doesn't take very long and is a lot less mess than paint remover also with paint remover their is the chance  of taking out any void filler, If you want to use a paint remover we used to use oven cleaner to take painted names off fiberglass boat transoms. howie

Yeah howie1a,  easy-off works great removing painted names on boats. I used to be a yamaha outboard mechanic when I worked for a local marina.  I rigged new boats from start to finish.  That was before I hurt my back.

Yep, paint stripper will soften the butt plate pretty easy. I didn't like the look of the hard plastic, so I pitched it anyway in favor or a softer rubber/hard foam one.
