History repeats... PICS this time!
« on: June 26, 2008, 01:11:44 AM »
Got another marmot (g'hog) in the same place and almost exactly the same way as last time.  This one is smaller, but decided that the crawl space would make a great new home.  First time I saw him, I tried to circle around, but he was having none of that.  So the rifle went back in the 'Gator, and I figured I'd get a shot later.  Sure enough, same deal as last time.  On foot, I couldn't get close, but come driving up in the noisy, smelly 'Gator, and he just sat there looking at me.  This guy seemed a bit more skittish, so I stopped sooner, measured out at 33 yards.  Same as last time, rested over the steering wheel, put the cross hairs between the eye and ear, and let the .20 cal. CP do it's thing.  Yup, I had the .20 cal. barrel in this time.  I think I pulled my shot a bit, as you can see, the left eye is gone.  And no exit wound, I think the shot quartered a bit toward the right ear, and the pellet just slid along the inside of his skull and stayed there.  The results were the same, tipped over, twitched a few times, and was done.  By the time I reloaded and walked up to it, it was all over, no need for a second shot.  Funny thing, my least favorite pellet, the Crosman Premiers, have taken both of these guys so far.  I've also taken both with what I basically consider my "bird gun" Talon, my long barreled .22 hammer sits at home because it's unwieldy in the car or truck.  Guess I need to trade off my 24" .22 for an 18" :-).  Later.

Actually, John, it's an 18" or so barrel.  I say "or so" because it's not an Air Force barrel.  It's one I got in trade, it's a remachined Benjamin, I believe.  I've had some consistency issues with it, don't know if I've resolved them all or not.  I made some changes in my rifle, not the least of which was a thorough cleaning.  But I'm afraid the real issue is the machining, the pellet leade is strange.  If this last try hasn't solved the problem, I'm going to bob about 1/4" off the breech end of the barrel, and polish it out.  If that doesn't cure the problem, I'm afraid I may just toss it and try to get an Air Force .20.  Still not sure how "necessary" a .20 cal. really is, but this thing seems to have a place in my arsenal, and the performance warrants keeping one.  Guess I'll need to get ANOTHER Talon so I can have all three set up :-)!  Later.

So 18 inch will fit with the end cap. Makes me wonder why a Talon SS is not available with a regular 18 inch barrel. Maybe I can get some time with mine this weekend.

Yeah, John, the 18" barrel ends up just about flush with the end of the Condor/Talon end cap.  The TSS end cap WON'T work.  Fortunately, if you buy a new Air Force barrel, it comes with an end cap, only the 12" ones get the TSS cap.  Doesn't show that well in the pic, but the one on that gun was an old style Condor/Talon cap, had a very long taper to it.  I hated the look, so I stuck it in my wood lathe and turned it down to a nearly flat face with just the slightest chamfer on the edge.  I think it looks cool, and will probably do the same thing to any other 18" barrel cap I get.  I like the taper on the 24", though, although I'm thinking seriously of swapping off my 24" .22 barrel on an 18" one.  The more I shoot my other one with the 18" barrels, the more I like it, and the less I like the 24".  I certainly don't think I'd be giving up enough power to matter.  The great thing about these guns, keep swapping stuff around, and eventually, you end up with perfection :-).  Later.
