Airforce talon ss
« on: July 03, 2008, 11:16:39 PM »
Hey guys i was intrested in picking one of these up but have some questions.  How much pump will it take to reach 3000psi. Also read that the first time u pump sthe hardest then comes easier, why is that.  Is pumps a good way to fill it because i don't want to run down to get the scuba tank filled when empty cause it just adds up. Do you find when filling you talon annoying after your done with it with a pump.

Hey Jim,,,,

Welcome to the forum, nice to have you with us.

As for pumping up the talon ss,,,,,,, I have a talon however I use my pump just to "top off" the fill,,, I use my scuba tank to fill it, much eaiser.  I've never filled it from empty to full using the pump so I can't tell you if it get easier after the first full fill.  I use my talon for hunting so I don't really shoot it until the point where it's so low that it needs a major refill.  I usually use it for a days hunting, usually arounds 20 or so shots, then use the pump to top off the tank again before I put it away.  That way when I go hunting the next time I can just take it out of the gun safe and hit the woods  :)

On occasion I will do alot of shooting with the gun,,, when I'm testing new pellets or power wheel settings,,,, that's when I use the scuba tank to keep me shooting.  Much easier than the pump.

My advice would be....... if you can get a good deal on a scuba tank set up than go ahead and buy it, I don't think you'll be sorry you did.  I personally feel that having the pump as a backup, or a "top off" tool, is advantageous also, but others may feel different.

Anyway,,, I love my talon, great gun, I think you'll love it also.   Again, welcome and I'll be looking forward to your future posts, and if you hunt with that talon ss be sure to post the stories and pics in the hunting gate.

Lots of good info, and some good insights as well.  I don't pump, or use scuba tanks, the Talons aren't a real good candidate for either, IMO.  The tanks are high volume, which is why first time pumping is such a bear, and you fill to 3000 psi or so.  I fill from a 4500 psi, 443 cu. ft. industrial nitrogen cylinder.  If you're going to get a Talon, I'd recommend a 4500 psi carbon fiber tank, they're expensive, but you'll get LOTS more fills per tank.  Or do what I did, find a gas supplier and rent a N2 tank :-).  I think it's a better option than scuba tanks, especially if getting them filled is a 100 mile round trip (like me), or if you can't find someplace to get a 4500 psi tank filled.

BTW, the Talon SS is a great little gun, I've got 2, but neither one has an SS barrel in it!  I finally realized I didn't like the balance with the 12" barrels, nor did I shoot them as well, and the 24" is too muzzle heavy.  So now I'm a big fan of 18" barrels.  So if noise isn't an issue, give it some consideration.  Good luck!
