Gamo Varmit Hunter w/GRT III Trigger
« on: July 14, 2008, 02:34:35 PM »
My first post, I just bought this rifle from Midway and I love it! I installed the GRT III trigger today and what a difference, I ordered on Friday and received it on Monday. Even though I knew it was way better than stock (how could it be worse?) my first shot was in the dirt as I came up to sight the target. This is the single best thing to improve the Gamo I know of. I'm not new to springers, I have a Beeman/Webley Vulcan, Beeman/Webley Tempest and Beeman P1, all bought around 20 years ago. I rarely shot them until recently, I got the bug again for some reason. The old Beeman's still shoot great, no problems so far. I'm learning so much reading this forum, the technology and philosophy has changed quite a bit in 20 years. Back then there was no internet so researching was more difficult. I bought a bunch of the PBA pellets and they are neat, but after reading Bob's and others posts I realize I shouldn't be shooting them, oh well, I'll still shoot them once in a while for giggles. I think it's like life, it's what you do the majority of the time that counts.

Here's a video I did tonight, it wasn't benchrested, but I was leaning on a column 21 yards away. I'm not a great shot, but it sure looks like the 2nd shot was a flyer (Gamo Hunter pellets). My favorite pellet was the Beeman Silver Jets, I shot my last box without realizing I couldn't get them again, bummer.

T, if you have trouble sighting in the laser, like sight it, shoot and need to sight again?? Sight it as best as you can, then put one drop of crazy glue right on the allen screws. I found it's the only thing that will keep it sighted!!!!! My son HAS to have it!!!!! If you can, let the Tuna give it a Turbo Tune, what a difference!!! Enjoy it bro!!

Welcome to the GTA Jim...I like the video and shooting those visual targets.  You definitely made a great choice by getting the Golden trigger!!!  Next thing will be to have CDT do a tune on it...You believe the difference!!!

No, but I WANT to sometimes. Thanks guys for the welcome. I'm not much of a hunter, I've taken my share of game and pests over the years, but got a soft heart in my older years (except for rats, but haven't seen one in years, my dog takes care of any pest/varmit/cat problems in the yard). But I still love firearms and airguns. That gold trigger is unbelievable, I can't get over the difference. I want to have it tuned, I had the Vulcan tuned years ago and know what it does, might do it soon to the Gamo and Bob would definitely be the one I'd get to do it.

I was in Bass Pro Shop yesterday and bought some Gamo Rockets, there was no weight anywhere on the package so I took a chance. Gamo says they are 9.6gr online, I weighed several and the most I got was 9.3gr, all the other pellets I have measured as advertised. Do you think 9.3gr would really hurt the springers? I also bought some Predators but haven't had a chance to try them yet.

Yes, it does move a bit, I wasn't sure if it was the mounting or the screws, now I know! Thanks for the tip Joe, I'll drop a bit a CA in the screws tonight.

Jim, first of all, try and get it tuned SAP!! I just opened up my brand new Shadow Fox this morning. I didn't even open the box, just sent it to the Fishy Dude when it arrived!!! Night and day, truly!!! I don't think you'll hurt anything, but that is just about the end of the spectrum for me. I prefer 7.9 - 8.6. I think you'll find that those pellets aren't that accurate either. Tell us what you think of them bro.

I ran several pellets thru the Gamo last night, everything from H&N Match, Predators, Rockets, Gamo Hunters & Magnums and several RWS types, all did pretty well. I'm impressed with the Predators, the fit to the barrel was always good, no deformed pellets, same with the Rockets. All hit within about 1.5" of aim point, way better than I would've thought. I tried a few in the P1, there was a bigger spread, but that was probably my inability to shoot. The phone book test with the Predator was impressive, massive expansion and penetration, more than any other pellet I've tried. I would think it would be a good hunting pellet. The worst pellet for accuracy seemed to be the Rocket, I guess it being the heaviest hurt it. But if I sighted it in with them, I think they'd be ok, but I don't plan to shoot them much.

Homemade Varmit Hunter?

I was so impressed with the Gamo Varmit Hunter, I made one from stuff I had lying around, the only thing I needed was some mounts and I bought them at a gun show this weekend. I had to remove the hooded front site from the Vulcan, it reflected light back into the scope. Other than than, it's a sweet shooter!
