Logun S16- Any good?
« on: July 16, 2008, 05:16:15 PM »
I am thinking of getting this gun to replace the springers I am currently using. I've seen the YouTube videos and they make shooting rats look like a cake-walk. Does anyone own one? If so, how do you like it? Does the sound suppressor barrel work as advertised? How's the fit and finish? What are other alternatives I should also take a look at that are comparable? ie multiple round magazine, about 600 fps, sound suppressor, etc. Thanks for listening.

If you like the "Black Rifle" look, the S-16 and the Air Force Talon/Condors are about the only choices I know of.  Unfortunately, the Talon's aren't repeaters, single shot only.  Great little guns, though, I've had two.

Although I've never owned one, I've done some research on the S-16.  I don't believe the power is adjustable, and it's closer to 1000 fps rather than only 600.  By all accounts, the shroud is very effective, and being modular, you can decide how critical it is to your days shooting plans.  It's heavy, around 8 lbs., and I've heard that there are issues with seals, they're prone to leakage.  Also that the repeating mechanism requires a firm hand.

For the same money, you can get an Air Arms S410 ERB, 10 shot mag, integral shroud that's highly effective if my older S400 is any indication, and easily adjustable power, with a really good range on the adjustment.  Of course, it's a more classic looking rifle, and you can't carry a spare filled tank.  The older model 400 I just got is a .177, it does 27 fpe with Eun Jins, 23 with CHP's.  30 to 40 good shots per fill, might be higher.  I have a discrepancy between the rifle gauge and my filler gauge.  Check out the review I just did.  This is a rifle you can literally take out of the box, fill, load, and shoot.  All the glowing reviews of the 400/410's are true, they're just great rifles.  Anyway, hope that helps, and keep us posted on what you decide on.  Later.

Dave

Thanks for the input daved. I looked into the s410 and I like how you can see of you need to refill the magazine without removing it from the gun. The power adjusting is also pretty neat, but it looks like it can do only about 80 shots between refills. The Logun with the 12oz CO2 looks like it can do about 500 shots between refills, which to me is an advantage because I will be shooting hordes of rats with it. It looks like I am going to take the plunge and get the Logun- just not sure if I want to wait for the Evo model, though.

Hmmm, the gladi8tor is a pretty neat looking piece, but it doesn't have a sound suppressor. It's also discontinued... so says the PA website.

New S-16 Evo?
« Reply #5 on: July 31, 2008, 07:49:29 AM »
Has anyone heard anything about this new model? I have searched and searched but came up with nothing solid. Apparently it is supposed to be released this month but I don't see anyone here in the US carrying it yet. I have emailed Webley sales but have not gotten any replies.

So last week I took the leap and bought an S-16XS CO2 after months of deliberating and waiting for the new EVO model. Well, the new EVO model (about $1600!! YIKES!) may not even make it over the Atlantic, so I got the XS model. I have only put about 30 rounds through it and here is my first impression...

1. Loudness- This gun is very quiet. When you first get it, there is just one shroud on the barrel. It's quiet as is but as soon as you add the second shroud, it gets very quiet. All I can hear is a twang, which is quieter than the twang from the Gamo Whisper I used to own. Definitely the quietest gun I've ever shot.

2. Fit and Finish- I was very surprised at how heavy this gun is when I picked it up for the first time but got use to it very quickly. The pistol grip makes it very mobile and easy to handle. Very solid gun- looks better made than all the other air guns I've previously owned. Tolerances also look very good. When you pick up the gun and play around with putting on and off the shrouds, it feels like a rock. Thread tolerances are very good. The paint seems durable but we will see how well it handles farm duty.

3. Power- I haven't had a chance to really see how powerful it is but first impressions are not bad. After I filled the CO2 tank at a paint ball shop, I was surprised to find that the needle on the gun's gauge was in the red, which I guess means it needs a refill. Well, I didn't want to run back to the store to find out what happened so I still shot it at a Grainger catalog anyways. The hollow point pellets easily went through 1/2 in of paper. Not bad at all and it looks like it'll be enough to knock down rats. I'll find out what happened the next time I refill.

4. The cocking lever, which has gotten so much attention, was very hard to move at first. It just did not want to move smoothly. However, after a couple of minutes getting familiar with it, it got easier. I can now see what all the attention on the lever was about and I have concluded that it really is down to the user. I was well aware of this so I made sure before I put a round in the barrel I knew what the lever felt like. If you are thinking of getting this gun, I strongly advise taking at least 5 minutes playing with the lever so you know what it feels like when it works right.

So that's about it for now. I can't wait to get a scope on it and start putting it to work. YIPEEE!!

By the way, anyone know what kind of sling works with this gun?

Can't help with the sling, Mark, but I think I know what's up with the pressure gauge.  The gas pressure of liquid CO2 is only around 850 psi, as I recall, and certainly well below where you would want to be refilling if running it on air.  Both my rifles need to be refilled at around 1400 psi.  They don't use a different gauge for CO2.  Good luck, and how bout some pics?  Later.

Hey Mark...are you in the States?  When you say you add the 2nd shroud....is it like a "you know what" that you screw into the front of the barrel?  Btw, how much did you paid for it and where did you order it from?....A U.S airgun shop?

Thanks for the input guys. Unfortunately, I don't have any pics of it now. I'll get some up soon. I'm thinking of getting a 1-pt sling but have to figure a way to attaching it so the gun is balanced and won't scratch.

Gamo2hammerli, I am in the states- Southern California area. Yes, it is a "you know what" that is attached that makes it even quieter. It comes with the gun and if you look at pictures of it on the web, you can see the joint where in screws into the normal barrel. There are a total of 2 additional pieces, one of which is the 'you know what'. I paid $815 for it at PyramydAir.com- no tax and free shipping. They are based in Ohio. Delivery was a quick week with ground shipping. I think they have some left and from the last I heard, the EVO model is not coming here. I spoke to Logun in the UK and they said PA is the sole distributor here in the US.

As an update on the CO2 version, it is not as powerful as I initially thought. I shot some rats at 10-15 yards with hollow points and it was enough to take them down. But, over 20 yards, the hollow pts would not penetrate. I may need to get another magazine for pointed pellets for those shots. So far, the pressure from the CO2 tank appears to be ok- I haven't noticed any drop in pressure after about 100 rounds. The inner ends of the barrel look ok, no nicks yet. I will have to keep an eye on it as I heard that as pressure drops, the far end of the shroud gets banged up and pellets start flying everywhere.

Forgot to add- No recoil with this gun. Could be because of the inherent lower pressure from CO2. Anyone with the compressed air version want to chime in?
