Opinions again, please- "best" scope?
« on: October 04, 2006, 02:13:09 PM »
As I'm sure EVERYONE knows by now, I have a new RWS 350 .22 on it's way.  And I'll need to put a scope on it. Sorry, Pistolero, I know iron sights are cool, but I can barely shoot myself in the foot with them :-).  Problem is, there are a lot of scopes out there!  And the pricing seems to be all over the place.  I know, a lot of it boils down to "get what you pay for".  But there's no way I can rationalize a $300 scope.  So I need to be looking at the under $200 glass.  Not that that narrows down the field much.

I have a Leapers 30mm 3-12x44 AO full size on my CFX.  Great scope, but I think the 350 may warrant more power.  The only other scopes I have recent experience with are both BSA's, a 4x32 and a 2-7x32 AO.  At $120, the Leapers seems like a really good deal.  But is there a similarly priced scope that's brighter, sharper, tougher, etc?  Gene posted an article about a Simmons scope, how do they compare to Leapers?  They seem a little more expensive for comparable models, are they worth the extra $$$?  Or is there something else out there that's the "best bang for the buck"?

So here's everyone's chance to pitch their favorite glass.  You people really helped me make the decision to get the 350, now I'd like your help (again!) in putting a scope on it.  So let her rip! And thanks!

Dave

I have the Leapers 4x16x50 mildot illum reticle on my .22 350 and love it.  Has stood up well and functions superbly. I have dialed it up to 16 a few times but to be honest I usually have it set on 9 power for most of my shooting, but it is nice to be able to "crank her up" if I need to".  Oh yeah, forgot to add,,,, Cheaperthandirt.com has really great prices on the Leapers Scopes.  Enjoy your new rifle     :)

Hey Dave

A scope is generally a personal thing. With my bad eyes I have tried allot of scopes. So many variables to consider I have found out. For me I need a clear scope...:)

I have a $25.00  Barska scope which in my opinion is better than some BSA scopes that I have purchase for $60.00 plus dollars..:) I am careful though which rifles I put certain scopes on. I would not put a BSA Platinum scope on my Hunter 1250 .22 in fear it would tear it up.

The BSA Platinum is a good scope for light air gun recoil. Probably best for a PCP. Min 15 yards to infinity.

The Bushnell Banner and Sportsman scope are very clear for me. I have a couple Simmons which I feel are clear also. I have the 2 of the BSA 2-7X32 scopes that I put on my QB's. My Hunter 1250 .22 I have the Leapers 4-12X50 scope on. It is clear for me. I wish I could look through a $1000.00 scope and see if there is a big difference in it and what I have...:)

I am always in search for a good clear scope that would let me adjust objective from 0 to infinity. lol

One thing is for sure Dave, you will probably want something that you will see clear at 60 yards or more. I don't have an answer for you but you may get a good honest reply on something that will fit your need.

By the way did you check out Straightshooters air gun and scope match up.

Good Luck

I have the .22 RWS 350 M and love it.  I have mine scoped with the Bushnell Legend 5-15x40 Mil Dot on a one piece Accushot mount.  I have had no problems with this scope or mount.  The scope provides a bright, clear and crisp image.  I think it is a good, tough scope.  Check with Duraham Outdoor Supply - 168 bucks.  Other type reticles are cheaper.  Also check with DNR Sports.  They are sometimes a few bucks less.  Both dealers have 2-7X32 Legend models for a good bit less (around 120 bucks?).  The Accushot mount is dirt cheeps and works very well for me.  I have 7 or 8 and none have ever slipped but they are not adjustable if you run into the dreaded droop problem.  I did not have the droop problem with my 350 M but have with other rifles.  I like the Beeman 5039 (I think that is the model) for an adjustable mount.  It is more expensive but is solid as granite.

Cheers,

Jim

I have the same scope but it's on my Shadow 1000.

I love it.  Works great, stays put etc.

Oddly enough, I got mine from Cheaperthandirt.com as well.

Daved,

Natchez supply has the best prices on the Bushnell Banner's and the Simmons Pro Air. I like the 4 x 12 x 40 A/O and the 6 x 18 x 40 A/O. They both are great scopes. I have had a Simmons Pro Air 4 x 12 x 40 A/O on my model 36 for almost 7 years without any trouble at all. I have a Redfield 4 x 16 x 44 A/O on my model 350. When my other one comes, I will put the Simmons Pro Air 6 x 18 x 40 A/O on it. I use the Beeman model 5039 mount on most of my RWS rifles. Best of luck...

Hey, Gene,

Every time I try to bring up the part number for this scope on Natchez site, I get a "number not found" message.  How did you order yours?  Did you do it on line, or did you have to call in your order?  At the moment, I'm not overly impressed with Natchez.  Like airguns, a fast miss is still a miss, well, a great price is only great if you can actually get it.  Thanks.
