Do these numbers sound OK for a stock SS?
« on: July 26, 2008, 02:05:12 PM »

Hello all. I've been working on it, adjusting this and that and pumping......lots of pumping. Thank whoever I got a Hill Pump.

I'm just wondering if it sounds about right power wise?

17.9gr Crow Mags 776.2 Ave

16.4gr JSB Preds. 797.6 Ave

15.9gr JSB Exacts 798.7 Ave

14.4gr Cros. Dome 814.4 Ave

These numbers are over 10 shots with a full 3000psi fill. Chrony is about 1' away. Top Hat is at .083

Thanks in advance.

Actually sounds a little slow, Greg, but I'd be interested in what kind of numbers you get for a 30 shot string.  A lot of times, these things prefer something less than a 3K fill, and will start slow but then speed up as the pressure comes down.  Wish I could be specific, but I never saved any chrony data with the 12" .22 barrel, I was usually shooting either the 12" .177 or 24" .22.  TH seems a little big, what's your PW set at?

Do you have MS Excel available?  If so, I have a nice spreadsheet set up for 2 30 shot strings, once the data is entered, hit one button and it produces a line graph.  I still need to do a little tweaking on it, it currently auto selects the graph range, and I'd prefer it to use the same range all the time.  Makes the graphs more consistent.  But if you can use it, I'll email you a copy to play with.  I've got my Beta chrony set up for 30 shot strings, someday I'm going to upgrade to a Gamma :-).  Let me know.

I'd love another Excel spreadsheet Dave!  I already have one I use for 10 shot string chronys.

PW is at 8 as anything higher doesn't do anything.   I had a world of misery messing with the top hat previously and had tried it up and down.  I was getting no where.  I ended up calling Air Force and they suggested a higher top hat with 3k fill.  It worked well enough that I'd decided to leave it but I am willing to tinker again now.  I'm actually going to be doing a 30 stringer today! (First time too)

I'd appreciate any suggestions/assistance for sure.

As is, it's giving me .692 groups at 30 yards with 10 shots.  I just know it can do more.

Thanks Dave

I'm sending the spreadsheet now.  You're right, at 30 yards you should be around 3/8", certainly no more than 1/2".  Of the pellets you're using, Crow Mags sucked in my Talons, CP's tend to throw flyers, and I only recently FINALLY got a tin of Exacts, they look pretty good.  I still think Kodiaks are the best pellet in these rifles, regardless of caliber, barrel length, or power.  I know they're hard to come by these days, I have a small stash, if you need a tin, let me know.  Later.

Wow!!!!

I'd like to believe my numbers are good CS.  Only catch is...my dial is at 8!!

Do you have the ability to measure your top hat?  I'd love to know where it is.

Well I accidently erased my first response so--I just leave my PW set around 5. I don't think the PW adjusts the velocity as much as AF would lead us to believe. My tophat is about .080 give or take a little. I really don't want to operate on the "cusp" to where a small change makes a significant difference. I started driving myself nuts with the PW and tophat. Dave has done a lot of work with various settings etc. He was the one who first told me that the factory setting on the tophat was too high around .132 as I recall. BTW I purchased a few extra set screws from AF for the tophat after reading a horror story on one of the forums. With all the pumping you are will be doing you might want to start making a "pumping fitness" video. I look forward to info commercials--LOL.

No problem, next time I'm at the studio I'll measure it. Very little difference between PW setting 8-10, if any at all.

I have a Stock SS with TH at .8 and PW at 5 with a 2800 Fill

With JSB exacts I start off shooting around 810fps then go to around 800 after 10 shots.
