Chronograph Questions

A lot of you say you are using Chrony's. I am interested in knowing just how far it is from the mussel of your Air Gun to the front of the Chroney? also how far to your back stop from the Chroney?

I usually set mine on top of a step ladder and shoot thru it from a foot or two back.  no backstop....I just let the pellets go into the woods.  it is my second chronie, my first one I  shot, I was maybe 6 feet away and wasn't carefull.  I hit the led readout with a 9mm ball out of a crosman with a 9mm barrel. as I recall the shot before it was at about 47 fps!     I now have a block of a 2x4 that covers the readout when shooting.  john

LOL John... Just had to laugh... When I bought my chrony I made a rifle holder to shoot from. Lined the chrony up real nice and even, and put up a new halagen light above it. I was so proud of what a neat job I did. Set up a small back stop.. I laid the rifle in the mount and turned light and chrony on and fired the rifle.. Well I was a bit low on my backstop....lol. The pellet went to the other end of the garage where I had chemicals and spray paint. I shot a brand new can of polyurathane.  It let loose and went all over the garage leaving a mess every where...   I laughed at myself too..

I set my chrony up after looking at CDT's setup. The end of my muzzle is about 3 feet from chrony... Works fine..

I have my chrony set up on a tripod.  I put the tripod/chrony in front of my shooting bench so that when I'm set to fire the muzzle end is about 6" away and about 6" high compared to the chrony.

I gauge all my muzzle velocities and foot pounds of energy calculations from a "fps at muzzle" standpoint.

My backstop is essentially my pellet trap.  Usually at 30 yards but sometimes less.

From the muzzle to the first light is about 6 inches, pellet trap is about 1 ft. behind back light. The use of a rest is a must if you don't want to kill it.

I just shoot into a phone book.  If the pellet makes it through the white pages 600fps, if it makes it to "car repair" 650fps, "farming equiptment" 700+, "housing" 750....if you make it to "xylophones", you're kicking serious butt!

I set my Beta on a tripod 3 feet in front of the muzzle.  That was the distance called for in the info I downloaded when I borrowed a friends Alpha Master before I got mine.  I just looked, the owners manual for my Beta doesn't even mention air guns.  I either shoot without a backstop, other than the hill behind my house, or use my pellet trap at whatever range I happen to be shooting at.  Don't know how much difference it makes, maybe I'll try some tests at my usual distance, then shoot the same pellets at say 6 inches.

Dang Dan, Wish I had thought of that. LOL  Could of saved $60.00 on the F1 Chrony..  And thats pretty good for a Texas yellow pages. South Carolina yellow pages are probably much smaller, so I would have to make appropriate adustments according the geography of things...

Now let me see if I got this right.

1.. You set your Chrony up around 6 inches to 6 foot in front of the Air Guns' mussel except if you use a standard phone book. ( I don't think mine is standard, it is less than 1/4 inch thick. How thick is a standard phone book?)

2.. Don't use a 9 mm gun untell you cover your Chroney with 2X4's and other stuff.

3..For the back stop it can be from 1 foot to infinity if shooting horazonly, except DON"T use full paint cans. If I shoot up in the trees or into the woods or tall grass forget the back stop.

Armed with all of your suggestions I can now get set up. I think you very much for the info. Now I know I will get it right. How could I loose?

I've got my second Beer and my First Aid  kit, so off I go. Got lots of testing to do, maybe I should take a 3rd Beer just incase. Don't want to run short.

Hehe, my phone book is about 2 inches thick, better make sure that scrawny phone book of yours has the number to 911 in it, just in case the 9mm bounces off the 2x4's and hits your beer causing you to have a heart attack.
