Super Streak or Walther Falcon Hunter in 22
« on: August 10, 2008, 09:43:39 AM »
Am looking for a nice, scope included air rifle for the pigeons, gophers, ground squirrils and raccoons with the occasional skunk and porcupine in the mix. Probably some targets but mainly for sighting in from time to time. Most will be nailing the invaders around the farm.

Looked at these two only online as no dealers within 100 miles or more.

Anything that really sets one over the other?

Was looking at the 350 magnum but with DaTuna retiring and the custom springs no longer available  I won't go there.

If I do get one before fall gets into full swing what do I need to do to make sure I get the best and smoothest use from it?

since you don't want to go down the 350 mag road.....seriously consider the rws 460..........hell of a hard-hitter and better quality than super-streak or falcon hunter.  its german made!!
ask timmy1959 about the 460....he has one and it really hits hard!!.  superstreak is chinese made and walther is diaper-head made.  personnaly i like the german-made guns!...and i'm irish!
The hardest part of getting old is trying to look good naked!

Something about the way that reads is just funny as hell.

From reviews I've read people seem to be happier on average with their Falcons than the Super Streaks. Every review I've read on the Super Streak gives the definite impression of disappointment in the product.

The 350 Magnum price is what's so enticing. I've got one of those on my wish list.

Good luck,

Just MHO, but I suspect your thinking is somewhat out of kilter.....

Any german made gun needs a tune less than any 3rd world country gun. A stock 350 will definately shoot better than either one of the guns you mentiond stock. And probably as good or better than either of those two guns tuned. There's just no comparison.

Again, JMHO

Good point, Iz. Apples and oranges.

Also resale should be considered. The 350's gonna hold it's value well.

I had a Walthers Falcon Hunter .22 for a while. It was an accurate gun. Too bad it fell apart in less than 100 shots. Don't count on Umarex to fix it either. After Umarex was done with it, I returned it to the retailer with a little more cash for a Super Streak .22. It is a more refined gun than the Walthers. After 800 shots, it works great. I can count on a kill with every shot. It's very accurate. The only thing I did was put a GRT trigger in it. A lot of people really like the RWS, I have never fired one. Really don't have that kind of money either. Had one guy tell me he got his for $300 in the door. Well, I do think that was a few years ago at least. That would also be definitely without a scope. But good luck, maybe you can find one for $300. If you do, please let me know, I'd love to shoot one. But you will find there are a few people who know how to spend your money better than you do. Good luck in your quest. I'm sure you will get what is right for you. Have a great day. Lee

 Hi, Lee.

 It's not $300, but it's darned close:

 and:

 http://straightshooters.com/rws/r350pricing.html

Funny, there's sites that are asking $400 or more for 'em. Your post scared me and I had to go check. I really want to get one, but at 400 they'd be over the amount I can justify spending on another toy.

Hello Mahonri and Welcome to the forums.Like Lee(Shootist) mentioned, if you get the Super Streak you'll benefit immensely with the replacement GRT111 trigger. The factory trigger will be terrible in comparison. As far as upkeep and maintenance goes with any spring piston air rifle that is scoped, you'll want appropriate allen wrenches  and screw drivers to adjust all the screws on the mounts and scope rings, cleaning supplies and corrosion inhibitors, and from time to time when necessary, upgrades in scopes and mounts. You'll find Mahonri, if you continue to read past posts on this forum you'll find a wealth of good information concerning other buyers experiences with the guns you mentioned as well as others that you might find interesting.I own , all in cal.177, two RWS 350's,A  Super Streak, and the Walther Talon  Magnum which is the almost same gun as the Falcon Hunter except in cal .177 and I can tell you that I wouldn't be afraid of any of these shooters for your stated intended purpose. In rank of quality and repairability, the Diana 350, The Walther (Hatsan 125)Falcon Hunter, Crossman/Benjamin(Chinese)Super Streak in that order. All have quirks but all are functional. You can get a lemon from time to time in any make or model but if you do, most warranties and vendors will try to make it right. Also if you take advantage of Sales Promotions occasionally offered by the vendors you can get some good deals from time to time.I got my 2nd 350 mag from Cobra Air Guns delivered to my door for $300.00 just 3 months ago on one of those limited time offers for example.Whichever make/model you ultimatly end up with ,share your experiences with it here.If you run into any problems, someone here on the forums can probably help.Good luck..

Mahonri, one more thing. You can probably cross porcupines off your list with any of these guns. I have it on good authority that they can soak up lead like like a bullet trap.Close range head shots will be your best chance.

Aw c'mon Lee..........

Ya just got to watch for the deals. I got an R9 from Cobra on one of their sales for $300 shipped. That was  GREAT deal! A .22 Panther not on sale for $190. I know I'm preaching to deaf ears, but quality is quality. I've got a chinese crosman(800 quest) and a Gamo(Shadow Sport). I know that a few guns I won't get rid of are my R9, RWS46 Stutzen, and my .22 Panther. I've got a couple other RWS guns that are really nice. The quality difference is huge.

I hope you do get to shoot some great European guns to compare with. But Streaks are $300. I'll admit I added a $60 BSA 3-12x44 scope and a $15 Accushot mount to it so I've got $80 more in the R9 than a Streak, but it's a lot more gun than ANY Chinese springer(although I will admit that my chinese experience is somewhat limited) . Not trying to diss you, but somethings you just have to experience to believe.

Ya just have to have patience and wait for the price you want. Although with the devaluating dollar it's getting tougher. Just don't get in a hurry and put your airgun bucks back and wait.

For what its worth.

 DNR's got the Model 34 Panther in .177 and .22 up for $166. That's a nice price.

34 with the wood stock for $184.

There's lots of options, and they're not all high dollar.

 See y'all,

But they are refurbished guns. My experience with RWS/Umarex refurbs is one rifle. I bought it several years ago from Airgun Express. Before they were bought up by Pyramyd Air( that might give you an idea when but I think it was 2004). Some people have had less than satisfactory experiences with recent Umarex refurbs, others have said they are a great deal for the money. Would I buy one? Heck yea, I'm waiting for a M52 in .22 cal to show up on the refurb list and it's mine! I have no experience with the WFH of the Super Streak. I own a .22 cal M350 and it's a great gun, with the right technique it's very accurate.

Y'know, I wouldn't obsess on the tuning issue myself. You've got to remember what this forum is. It's full of true airgun hobbyists. Try your purchase out of the box. Shoot it some, break it in, let the parts begin to mesh, and see what you've got. There's no hurry to get a tune, you can decide to do that at any time.

When you buy a new car do you immediately take it to a pro-tuning shop? I'm sure you could find forums where folks would insist that it needs to be done.

As far as CDT's retirement, there's other tuners out there. He's a favorite here, but not the only one in the world. I haven't looked into it, but I sense there's some bad blood between CDT and some other tuner/s. That's their battle, not ours. Try asking on another airgun forum or just use their search function.

As far as the Umarex reconditioned guns, although I've never bought one myself my impression from other people is favorable. I'd definitely look into that option seriously, as you could save enough money to get a decent scope and mount, maybe with some money left over. My experiences with package deal scopes hasn't been good, so buying one separately, in my view, is a real good idea.

Anyway, have fun. The kicks are in the hunt as much as in the kill. Same holds true for a search for a new airgun.

 Good luck,
