Gammo CFX .177
« on: October 14, 2006, 04:08:08 AM »
I recently purchsed the CFX.  I have read different articles and I am confused over which pellets to use.  One article said the GAmmo CFX does not like heavy ones and another one said it does.  Can someone out there with more experience than I have please let me know what they think?  One recommended the Beeman pellet.

Thank you

.

From what I understand, 8 .5 grains or so is a good limit for springers.

Many good pellets are in the 7 grain weight class

Hey, Harley,

I posted a partial answer to this on the Gamo Gate, might want to check it out.  If your CFX is stock, avoid heavy weight pellets, that would be anything over 9 gr.  The stock spring uses thinner wire, heavies lead to accelerated spring fatigue and failure.  According to Jim Maccari, a steady diet of heavy pellets needs a wire dia. of at least .128 as I recall.  At the other end, stay away from the ultra light pellets, say under 7 gr. or so.  They don't provide enough pressure build up to prevent the piston from slamming into the back of the chamber.  Not a good thing.  One thing to look for.  Apparently Gamo sells the CFX with two different barrels.  The "tight" barrel has the serial number on the barrel, the "loose" barrel has the serial number on the side of the receiver.  From what I've read, the tight barrel shoots the heavies better, as well as the Crosman Premiers, but you should still plan on replaceing the spring.  The other one DOES NOT like Crosmans, or Kodiaks.  Like I said in the other post, JSB Exacts and RWS Superdomes seem to be best.  Beeman Crow Magnums are also pretty good, but that's about it for my particular gun.  And believe me, I've tried a lot of pellets!  Oh, and my CFX hates anything in a pointed design.  BTW, Beeman has over a dozen different pellets, the only way to find the one that works best in your gun is to experiment.  Besides, that's 1/2 the fun.  Don't know what your set up is for shooting, but the CFX is one of the few springers that prefers being rested on something other than the palm of your hand.  Mine prefers a typical sandbag, with the fore arm rested just behind the balance point, and a fairly light hold.  Hope this helps, and don't hesitate to ask for more info, or to clarify something.  This is a good place for that.

Dave

Ya that was good information about the barrels. Did not know there were two barrels. I will have to look at my three CFX's and determine which is tight and which is loose.... What determins the ID besides the serial number Dave? Pre 2004 or post 2004?

I haven't seen any info relating to production dates, maybe they come from two different assembly lines?  The only difference is in the location of the serial number.  I've heard that the re-furb CFX's that Natchez gets tend to have the tight barrel.  Also, I think the Something-SCI Combo that's available on GamoUSA's web site also tends to the tighter barrel.  This is all second hand info I've picked up off the other Gamo forum.  Lots of chatter back and forth on this subject.  Also, I think it only applies to .177's, not .22's.  So your Royal shouldn't matter :-) .  I've also heard that it ONLY applies to the CFX, the other Gamo rifles don't seem to have the variation.  So where are your ser. nos. Gene?  Mine is on the side of the receiver, so I have the "loose" barrel, not that it matters much.  It's still more accurate than I am, it just prefers different pellets.  Later.

The difference in the two barrels can

have a difference in the pellet selected for one thing. The larger bore id would benefit somewhat from a little larger pellet or a light skirt pellet that would expand better into the bore. The barrels with the large bore almost always have a bit lower velocity reading using a "standard" pellet. Also, the smaller bore with the better fitting/sealing run of the mill pellet would also in most cases produce better velocity with most pellets. In some guns as much as 50-60 fps or more. However, with the right pellet being used for the particular gun, whether it is the small bore or large bore, accuracy should not be an issue (except for perhaps long range shooting) and that's what is most important. Velocity has no value without accuracy. That's pretty hard to beat into some peoples heads though...lol :)  :)  :)

OK Harley, you should find quite a few posts about CFX and pellets. I will try and help you. I understand it gets expensive buying all these different pellets..:)  First off not all men are made the same. Example: I love Gritts and Eggs. DaveD hates Gritts and Eggs.. So you could say the same about pellet rifles and pellets.

Let me give you a starting point. Don't go with heavy pellets with a CFX .177, because they could damage your spring over time. Stay under 10gr if possible. I think that is safe to say. If I am wrong, someone chime in on this.

Now RWS Superdomes work great in my CFX .177 . Also Beeman FTS work good. I have tried others like Crossman Premiere's and they are not as accurate as the latter are.

DaveD, I think has tried some other pellets in his CFX, so perhaps he may chime in. Also Rich has a CFX or two..:) Anyway hopefully some other members will help you out but I think you would be safe to wait and see what other CFX owners have to say..

Good Luck

I checked my CFX's today and both the Synthetic CFX .177 and the Royal CFX .177 have serieal numbers on the top of barrels. I have always noticed that the RWS Superdomes feel snug in the barrel. I put my Synthetic on the chrony today and it was in the 880's and that is ok with me.  Also was punching paper for a couple hours with the Synthetic. One thing for sure those CFX's are quite accurate.

Love mine..:)
