Burst Disks
« on: August 18, 2008, 09:23:26 AM »
I love to tinker with stuff and I saw on the TV an airgun to end all airguns.  It is the light gas gun at the Ames research facility nasa and man this thing can shoot bb's up to 30,000 ft per second.  It uses a piston to push hydrogen through a burst disk made of stainless steel to accelerate the bb.  I've seen the schematics of the light gas gun and noticed it looks roughly like the insides of a springer(except for the explosive charge behind the piston and the hydrogen).  I was wondering why no airgun uses burst disks?  I have read about different pellets having differing thrust curves based on pellet weight and dimensions wouldn't a burst disk eliminate those differences?  If you calibrate the disks to burst when the pressure reaches maximum (calculated for spring and piston longevity, barrel length) then it should give consistent air velocities increasing accuracy with a wide range of pellets.  I can just imagine a magnum rated springer with competition airgun accuracy

Seems like I've seen this before.  Maybe on one of the forums or whatever.  Someone had made an airgun that used some sort of metal foil to hold back the pressure until finally, Kapow!  Not a bad idea actually, except I've have to buy pellets AND burst discs:)

BTW, I work with the Airgun to end all airguns.  Mine shoots about 3 tons at about 45mph, but the acceleration is at about 16g's from a dead stop!
