Frank I hear what you are saying and it is hard to find good honest tuners that have not been beaten to death buy the public. And I do not mean to be a comic at this point in time . But the dark side might be a way for some too turn that don't have the knowledge , skill . and or equipment to do their own work . It appears that even the high end springers need some tear down and cleaning in these times . Marvin

Marvin is right about that -- it is apparent that you can't count on a springer being ready to shoot without any problems, at any price, without some preliminary work.  I have now gone through that with both my R9GF and now, again with my HW30S.  And I understand more clearly now why those who do tune guns find themselves in an unenviable position -- having to stock parts for lot's of different guns and having to deal with multiple models from multiple manufacturers who increasingly seem to have very little consistency and quality control in their production process.

It seems to me that anyone who just wants to have a nice shooting springer is ultimately going to have to learn at least the basics of working on their own air gun to the extent that they can disassemble, reassemble, clean and lubricate the entire mechanism themselves, and replace worn or defective parts if needed.  At leas that is the tack I am taking. I don't presume to be a custom tuner and I don't think I will purchase a lathe or make my own parts any time soon, though.  And I have no earthly ideal what to do if Jim Maccari ever quits making springs and seals.  So if you have a beloved air gun, it might be wise to order a replacement spring or two and a couple of extra seals to have on hand, because, like the late, great Jim Morrison sang:

"Well I woke up this morning and I got myself a beer . . . the future's uncertain and the end is always near."

I don't think CDT can be personally replaced, but I also don't think we need to concede the death of the springer along with his retirement. There are tuners right now, and there will be others. The market will decide which meet the need. Some cater to individual tastes and needs. There is room for more than one.
Reading the more PCP/CO2 oriented forums, it appears they are not exactly flawless, either.
Without debating the relative merits, I would say there are QUITE A FEW OF US who see springer technology as beautiful in its independent simplicity, and we are not going to die or melt down our springs anytime soon. We will learn and share referrals.
I plan to keep on springin' cause I don't like scuba tanks and gauges and thermometers and noise and such. I also don't mind a bit of pump-up action now and then.

I really just like a gun and a pellet.

Nothing against PCP, gas, and even rocket-launchers, I am just a springer/pumper dude. People will arise to meet the need. You have to be grateful (and I am) to Charlie and Gene for putting this forum up. Let the momentum continue! Springers forever!

Yes, we absolutely agree on springers.  Something very. . .  hmmmm -- elementally satisfying? -- about the feel and performance of a well tuned springer IMO.  And the same goes for pumpers (though I prefer single to multi-pumpers, as I shoot mostly targets).  But CO2 guns are very convenient in many circumstances, as a 12 gram CO2 cartridge is a pretty good way to portably store energy enough for dozens of shots.  But without any disregard to the dark siders and their impressive toys, I just (irrationally?) doubt that I will ever be irresistibly drawn to the allure of an air rifle that has to be pumped up with a glorified bicycle pump or recharge with a scuba tank, no matter how well or how hard it shoots.  And where springer junkies are concerned, CDT was one of the best loved sources for our "drug" of choice.

Please reread my post . I own springers too. Every one has different needs and abilities. I some times wonder why people take things so personal instead of being open minded. Marvin

Marvin?

???
I wasn't at all questioning or taking personally anything you posted,.  And I certainly do not mean to denigrate yours or anyone else's opinion or preference.  If my introspection gave that impression in the least way, then I sincerely apologize.  Some of my best friends own PCPs . . .

And I read and re-read and re-re-read the post.  Sorry if I come across to you as close-minded.
