FX Cyclone Review
« on: October 15, 2006, 11:57:58 AM »
First I must say after shooting springers for about 1 year now I am totally in love with this air gun sport. Sometime I get the cart ahead of the horse. Like my second springer was a Hunter 1250 .22 Royal at 9 lbs. That was right after I had purchase my S1K, 6 lbs..:) The effort between the two to cock was like night and day. Then I wanted to get a Co2 rifle, followed by a PCP. Well my first PCP is the Samatra 9 lbs.. Did not realize at the time I could not carry that for 3 or 4 hours like I could my S1K or the QB78. It has a bunch of power but not my cup of tea..:)

Now I still had the hots for a PCP but now I knew I would only be happy with a lite weight rifle like my S1K or CFX. Took me a couple months and I decided on the FX Cyclone. Here are all the features included with the FX Cyclone .22:

FX Cyclone .22 Synthetic
Biathlon style cocking mechanism
Removable, 8-shot magazine
Adjustable 2 stage trigger
Built-in pressure gauge
Lothar-Walther match grade rifled choked free-floated barrel
Full Barrel Shroud
Standard quick-fill nozzle
Removable air cylinder
Synthetic, ambidextrous sporter stock with rubberized pistol grip and forearm
Standard 11mm dovetail for scope mounts
3-stage external power wheel with settings for 14, 24 and 30 fpe
37" long and 5.75 lbs.....:)

Starting with the Biathlon cocking. It is the most incredible feature about the FX Cyclone. It took me a while to get adjusted to not pull my rifle off the rest like I was going to load a pellet..:) With the 8 shot rotary clip and the Biathlon cocking you can keep your gun on the rest and your eye on the target through 8 shots. The FX came with an additional rotary 8 shot clip. The next thing is the two stage adjustable trigger. I have left it set in the default adjustment. It has a fantastic feel and you know exactly when it will fire. Next is the quality of the FX Cyclone. The 8 shot rotary clips are a machined alloy. Even the shroud is made of some lite weight alloy. All the parts are alloy or brass except for the stock. The stock is of a high quality synthetic material. The forearm and pistol grip have soft rubber inserts for easy gripping. Over all this rifle is an excellent example of precision workmanship. Another great feature is that the air cylinder is removable and you can purchase additional cylinders at additional cost..:)

I love to shoot targets and lately I have been doing allot of shooting with my S1K .20 cal. With the FX Cyclone when full to half full I get 40 shots at 12 fpe. That is at the 12 FPE setting. It has three additional settings at 20 FPE and 27 to 30 FPE depending on pellet weight.
The effort to pump this rifle up with my FX pump is around 40 pumps when it is half full. Was having to much fun plinking at low power to mess with the medium or high power settings. Besides I have not had the time to play much with it. I did manage to set up one target round at low power. The range was 30 yards with a 20 difficulty. I tested three different pellets. CP's, JSB Diablo's and RWS Superdomes. Below is the target with each bulls marked with the pellet I shot. I shot a full 8 pellet clip into each bulls eye. Even though you do not see 8 separate holes most of them are on top of each other..

This is a remarkable shooter. I have not yet learned how to shoot as many one hole shots with my springers in 1 year as I have done in two days with the FX Cyclone. This rifle will make a marksman out of you... :)

The FX Cyclone has a fantastic fit, feel and finish not to mention the simplicity of changing rotary clips and cocking.  In my opinion it will give me many years of enjoyable shooting. :)

Okay, Gene, time to change your signature line!  No way you can claim baby status anymore!  Besides, you have way too many rilfle for that, anyway :-).  Nice review, has visions of my own PCP floating around in my head.  Of course, they're quickly chased away by visions of divorce attorneys...  That's a nice looking set-up there, isn't that your new Simmons Pro Air scope?  For some reason, I thought the Cyclone looked like a Condor or Talon.  How'd they get it so light with the more classic looking stock?  And how long is that barrel?  It looks much longer than the typical springer barrel.  So now that you've crossed over to the "Dark Side" (where the heck did that come from, anyway?), I suppose you won't talk to us lowly springer shooters anymore :-).  Just you and Ed.  Speaking of which, doesn't he have his new shooter together yet?  Been waiting for his review, too.

So with all that pumping, when are you going to pop for a SCUBA tank?  And of course, the extra tank (s?), and more mags, and...  Sounds like you might have to sell off some of those lowly springers or other too heavy guns.  Well, you just let us know, I'm sure there are guys here that would be happy to help you out, and probably for not much more than a 50% discount :-)!  Have fun, and keep us posted.

Dave

LOL Dave....... I love my springers and can't even think of one I would want to sell..:) But have thoughts about the Samatra though but it would be hard to part with. Time will tell.. Yes that is my new Simmons 8-16X40 scope on the FX. It is a keeper too.. :) Thanks to you Dave, I can enjoy it even more after your reduce power suggestion.. :) Don't think it is any longer than my CFX or S1k's. Over all lenth is 37".. One thing I forgot to mention in the review was how quiet it is. When I first shot it, I heard the pellet hit the target at 50 yards but could not believe it because it barely made any noise. That was on low power. I will continue the review with some velocity readings with different pellets on different power settings.

Very nice looking rifle Gene, congratulations.  Those targets are impressive also !!  I'm tempted to look into such a gun but the Mrs. has just calmed down from my last air gun spending spree.  Maybe in a couple of months.  Good luck with the gun :)

perhaps we've both found the holy grail :) :) :)

What's that structure on the top of the barrel just under the scope saddle?

LOL Ed, I don't know about that but I know I found a very nice accurate PCP shooter that is lite weight. Going to go squirrel hunting in the morning with it. All I need is a full charge and two rotary clips and a handfull of extra pellets and I wil see if I can bag some squirrels. :)

I'm going nuts here.

The gun may not be here for my B'day. It may be the week after. Got second day air on the delivery.  It seems when DayState ships is a mystic sort of thing.

I got the tank and reg, but no bang-bang.

Getting a tad annoyed

Drove 12 miles today, to "The Waters Edge" and got my tank filled to 4800 psi. It would cool to 4500 in a few hours [kevlar/carbon fiber is insulative]

Took 15 minutes and cost $4.00

We joked about how big a hole it would leave if it went, but as I left, carrying 4800 psi next to my hip, I was only the littlest bit white, and my shakes were haqrdly noticeable. :) :) :)

Now I wait for the Air Wolf.

I've gotta keepit. It should show up next week, just after my B'day, unless I get lucky and the give em a break and send me mine first :) :) :)

It might rust without some cleam dry 220bar air.

I'll keep your suggestion in mind, though. :-) ;-)

wow thats a beautiful piece Gene,
i checked their site, they make some nice guns.
i might have to allocate some funds from the family fortune to pick one up.
i just bought the wife a fancy flat tv so i might be able to work it out.
