Hunting story...long
« on: October 17, 2006, 09:43:04 AM »
Small game season has just opened up and I have been looking forward to this weekend all year. Why you ask? Well this is the first year with an airgun. Eastern Grey Squirrels are of course the main focus for the hunt.

Now opening day came and went without so much as picking up a gun (I had other commitments this day). But this past Sunday held a small surprise for me. I went to Church and then to my daughters football/cheerleading game and I figure that I would later finished sighting in the scopes (I was swapping them around) with a quick pop into the woods to take some squirrels.

As I was working on sighting in the  first rifle/scope my cousin drives up…Hmmm…I had invited him to hunt with me but I got that look…you know “what with BB guns?” We greeted each other and he seemed a little interested in what I was doing.
My cousin is the hunter in the family, goes to Colorado for Elk and Antelope (we live on the east coast) deer hunts with bow, rifle, shotgun so on so forth…You guys get the picture.

I explain what I was doing and to my surprise he asked if I had an extra gun (you could have knock me over with a tree rat)… Well I gave him the only gun with a scope and off into the woods we go (I own 27 acres of heavy wooded forest)..I gave him every shot and I played the role of the guide, he was able to hit two squirrels and only recover one (sorry no pics of that hunt). The funny thing is he realized that to fire a springer it take some technique and he admitted that it was hard then it looked…well all in all he had a great time and when he returns from another hunting trip in two weeks he wants to go out again and he admitted it was the most hunting fun he has had in awhile. My guess he liked it because it was a challenging hunt.

NEXT day I went to work….But 2day I was home…After the kids went to school I grabbed the only gun with a scope…lol…and out to the front porch. A couple of squirrels have been running a muck, making a mess of the decorations’ (corn stalks, pumpkins, and some other items) my wife told me to do something about it, before she did. What a great place to start the hunt…Sure as taxes and death they were there…They spotted me and one took off to the edge of the yard the other gave me a look and really didn’t want to leave, until I was almost on top of him…He to then also retreated to the safety of the same wood line…So they thought...(insert snicker here).

I crossed the yard and set myself up to take a shot. The target was about 20 feet up and only 7 yards away!!! The Gamo CF-X  put the RWS superdome right below the ear. The target fell out of the tree and it tried to get under some leaves before it expired 5 seconds after it hit the ground.

Target number 2 watch the whole thing ring side or should I say tree side. When I turn my attention to him he scurried up the tree to take a seat broadside. He too was up about 20 feet and 12yards out. This to easy. I place the pellet right below the ear, and he did a death grip on the branch and one by one each paw let go…Thud to the ground no twitching at all…Then the rain started. That's the end of the hunt for today, time for some paperwork to get done.

Good story, enjoyed it and the pics.  Good shooting.  I'm waiting for small game season to open up here, opens up on Nov. 1st  Hopefully I'll fare as well as you.

All the nutters are this size. I have oak, walnut and some other tree which help the population. It's practically squirrel heaven...

Congrats on converting another hunter and on your kills. There is something special about hitting the woods with a pellet gun.
