BKL & 44 Mag glitch
« on: October 17, 2006, 03:17:38 PM »
New scope showed up today.  I wish I hadn't sent the Leaper off already, I'd love to do a side by side comparison.  They're both 44 mm, and thery are both about the same length.  But this one looks longer, and the fron lens looks bigger.  I thing it's the 1" vs. 30 mm tube.  All the adjustments are smooth and precise, and I really like the target turrets.  Optics are excellent.  However, this isn't actually a review of the scope.

Turns out the turret clearance on the BKL mount is .125".  Also turns out the turret ring on the scope is 1/8" or .125".  The one minus the other equals zero clearance.  The scope is hitting the mount base, and I'm afraid it may be bending when the caps are tightened down.  Also, even though I thought I had the six screw mount pretty well cranked down, the 350 still managed to shift it all the way back against the big screw on top of the rail.  That's more than 1/4" in less than 30 shots!  And once the mount couldn't move anymore, the scope slipped in the rings.  I't looking more and more like I should have gone with the B-Square mount.  With BKL, you can either get droop compensattion, or .2" higher mount height, but not both.  At this rate, the Simmons may end up on the CFX, and the Leapers will go on the 350 when the replacement arrives.  Not what I wanted, as I think the Simmons is a superior scope, and I wanted the higher power for the extra range the 350 is capable of.

Any ideas or suggestions from 350 or BKL or 44 Mag owners would be welcome about now.  Short of epoxy, I'm not sure what it's going to take to keep a scope from moving on the 350.  So thanks in advance, guys.

Dave

Why not take a dremmel tool, or something similiar, and grind away just enough of the mount base to give you the clearance you need? You should only have to grind away a very small amount off the base, and it shouldn't effect the integrity of the scope mount.  Another option would be to actually cut the mount and make it into a 2 piece mount, I've heard of this being done in order to get around the problem you're having.

As for the mount slipping,,, did you degrease the scope rail, mount base, screws etc etc etc, prior to mounting the base and the scope?  If that's not the case then it sounds like you just didn't crank the mount scews tight enough.  Those BKL mounts have incredible holding power if you really crank them down.  Just be careful not to tighten to much.

I have the Accushot 1 piece mount on my 350 and it hasn't moved so much as a micron.  If the Accushot can hold on the 350 then the BKL most certainly should.

Anyway, just my 2 cents.  Hope you get the problem fixed dave.

Hi, Jeff,

Actually, that's exactly what I've been thinking of doing.  And since this is a "free" mount, I guess it doesn't matter if I do mess it up.  I just wanted to leave this as more of a last resort, after trying everything else I and the rest of you could think of.  Also, I'm having some second thoughts about this particular mount in general.  Like you, I have an Accushot 1 pc. high mount for my Leapers scope that was on the CFX.  After using the high mount for so long, I'm finding the much lower BKL to be uncomfortable.  I had the Leapers on the 350, and your right, with the Accushot 1 pc., with the stop pin hanging over the front of the rail, it didn't budge.  The scope slipped when I shot Kodiaks, but the mount stayed put.  I was looking at another Accushot, but the 1" mount only has 3 screws, and they made it shorter, about the same length as the BKL.  But I may go that route anyway.  Or find someone that wants the BKL's and work a swap for an adjustable.

Regarding the slip, no, I really didn't do a thorough job of prepping everything, since it was only going to be temporary, just until the drooper mount got here.  Anyway, thanks for the suggestions, and I'll keep you posted.

Dave,

Yes, you're correct, the new version of the Accushot 1" one piece high mount is now shorter and has only 3 screws.  I have 2 of the new Accushots but haven't used them yet.  If you are leary about using the new version Accushot mounts then perhaps you could "shop around" and try to find someone who might have some of the older versions in stock.  As long as your rifle doesn't have the barrel droop problem then the accushots would work.  In my case my barrel had droop so I had to shim the scope.

Let us know how you make out.
