Just shootin' off the back fence
« on: August 31, 2008, 04:12:00 PM »
Yesterday was too hot even for ground squirrels. Ample evidence of their destruction in the garden, but nothing much was stirring in this blazing part of Fresno.
Today we had a cold front with a very gusty high of only 92.
Sighted movement straight out from the old shooting rest, about 40 yards even. In the pic of my shooting rest below, he was left of the small regional capital (the hill, which is 33 measured yards) in the plowed area.
Subject was nervous, constantly moving, pausing only for a moment on the rim of the hole entrance... finally with a lull in the wind, pulled the trigger on a head shot and missed. Elevation perfect but impact left, consistent with wind drift.

Let the bugger stew for a while and went back to yard projects.

90 mins. later, went on back to my post, and there he was by the same hole. With exactly the same breeze.
Same elevation, one BSA mildot right... thop! the MP513 mails another CPHP to the fuse box at 40 yds, and a short death dance ensues with the usual ending.

Waited for any family members to check out the deceased (I get a lot that way), but no well-wishers today.

I did perform an autopsy to inspect terminal damage. Subject was 10" long (body), 16" nose-to-tail, adult. Probable cause of death was gunshot wound, .22 cal CP hollow point, which entered right side rear of skull and exited center of neck, left side. Exit wound showed absolutely no expansion, just a clean hole about .22 in diameter. There was actually more tissue trauma at the entry wound.
Autopsy interrupted before wound cavity examination, by outburst from staff ("is that MY camera?! What are you DOING with that thing?!!").

I knew there was another one active by that hole and as the sun began to set, resumed my post.
Immediately detected movement on near left, swung round to investigate, and there was Dinner at 27 yds. Unfortunately I was dialed into 16x with the AO set to 40 yds and in my greed, forgot to make any adjustments at all. Bunny looked like a woolly mammoth at that range and first round went right (wind, dummy) although hit heart/lung area. Bunny turned around and stood there. Spun AO down and put another round through the base of the ear.

The best part was showing Her Imperial Majesty how to convert a bunny into food. She was actually interested and reminded me not to forget the heart.

That was sweet.

Nice.  Wish I had that kinda yard to shoot off from.  Got some ground squirrel tryin to make way to the property, but too close to the road to be doing any shootin.  Good huntin.

Both were with the Baikal MP513 in .22 and the BSA 4-16x44 scope using CPHPs. My Walther is still in pieces back on the bench in San Diego, and the russki has the speed and trajectory you want to cover ground like this.
There is a horizontal line at about 100 yds, and that is the California Aqueduct system (canal), which can be caved in by the ground squirrels. Someday that field is all slated to be more subdivision (there is an even bigger open area to the right). It is utterly infested with squirrels now, except for a radius extending 270 degrees from the first picture... and since nature abhors a vacuum, they just keep moving back in and tunnelling into the Imperial Garden.
Other nice thing is only one immediate neighbor, who grows peaches and does not mind my shooting these perps at all.

Nice shooting, Dave. How do you like that MP513? I see it does the job just fine. I need to whack some tree rats and rabbits. How do you prepare them?

I like the MP513 and some others don't. vinceb quoted someone saying "you need a sense of humor to like this gun" and that is probably true. It is crude and strenuous. On the other hand, it is accurate as hell and very lightweight, with no perceptible hold sensitivity and launches real hunting weight .22s in the mid to high 700s, for about $160. The trigger isn't the best but it has worn in or I have gotten used to it.

It was a MUCH better investment that the Walther Falcon Hunter, though about 100 fps less powerful.

Here is an odd and tragic note: the neighbor I mentioned who did not mind me shooting? No joke, he was murdered down the street last night in a family dispute. He was a nice 60 yr old Armenian man. That is 320 miles north of where I am (he lived next door to the GF). Shot while babysitting the grandkids, by the OTHER grandfather. Sheesh.

PS: I like rabbit stewed in a 5 bean soup mix with white pepper and onions, taters, and garlic. I have had it lots of ways but for some reason that is my favorite. Sort of a white rabbit chili. Squirrels are stronger and sweeter and I like them on the fire or barbecue with salt, pepper, garlic, Melinda hot sauce (my absolute favorite for years), garnished with Johnny Walker on the side. Mostly I shot the squirrels around camp in archery season and they didn't make it back to where we had fancy things, but I always traveled with Melinda and Johnny.

Sheesh.....you would think anyone in their 60's would have mellowed out. I don't know what their argument or disagreement were....but it must have been VERY serious.

Well, I'm glad that the temps here in Fresno are coming back down. After that triple digit week we had it'll be nice to be able to work outside and not feel like a fried egg.

If it's hot in Fresno...   take a little two hour drive and hit Pismo!  It's always cooler over there!

I may join you there...It's been hotter than the hinges of Hades down here in B-town.  Cooler weather is definitely a welcomed visitor.
Go git \'em!

I'm in Texas now but lived in Morro Bay and Pismo over the last 13 years.  When the valley heats up the coastline gets the marine layer and cools off!

Yeah, used to live in San Luis Obispo. The highest it ever got there was in the mid 80's. I miss that place...
