Custom Triggers: Why not for this one
« on: October 19, 2006, 06:44:18 PM »
I like the custom GRT trigger for the Gamo/B19 chinese guns, but with the popularity of the ole Chinese B3-2, I'm just curious if anyone has ever looked into a better trigger design for it?? They sell like hotcakes, they're major fun, and a better trigger could really affect accuracy in them.
I know they have a trigger/sear setup that's kinda goofy, but I sure would like a 1lb'r for my custom B3-2.

Surely there is a way to make a better trigger for it....(hint, hint)

There is not a whole lot that can be done with those triggers except for polishing the contact areas Robert and in many cases can make a significant difference. Some of them are very rough to say the least, or at least they used to be... I haven't had one apart in a number of years so they may have improved.  It is important not to change the geometry on them and it also helps to burnish in the moly when it comes to the finish polishing also. A few years ago I thought about playing around with some different wire for that spring they use but never got around to it.

I'm thinking that the piston should be changed too. Where the sear contacts it. Maybe the geometry can be changed there and a whole new designed trigger sear combo?? I do know that it is the most tinkered with airgun on the market and everyone has at least 1 (or had). Surely there can be a design change in the :trigger/sear/piston or possibly even on the trigger block. I'm just wishful thinking here as I really don't have a clue, but after seeing what you did to a Gamo trigger (pure magic) i'm skeptical that there is little to be done with a b3 trigger.
Also, polishing (when it takes too much off) the sear can be dangerous. I've seen it on many b3's where they slip or wont cock at all after just a slight bit of wear.
So heres my challenge Charlie: " I double dog dare ya to make it better" :) hahaha

Yep...your right Robert...if over worked, they can be made to be dangerous. I haven't played with one in years and to be honest with you I don't remember just what it was like or even if anything could be done within reason other than maybe a little surface work and then with a lot of care. If I remember it correctly the trigger spring is a single spring with a couple of strange bends in it. You could play around and make a lighter spring for it with a lighter wire. Just be careful though.

Like I said, it was a long time ago and I don't really remember but that seems right. As far as the wire goes, you would need to measure it's diameter to start with and start from there until you get it right. I would just get a couple of pieces a bit small diameter (you can find wire at hobbt shops) and see how it works out. Making spring can be a real trip though, especially if you don't have a wire bending jig.

Years ago I used to have a jig for make fishing lure rigs and sure wish I had it now. It would be great for making small stuff.

Inventing a better design would not be difficult, making it a drop-in installation would be.
The trigger housing, pins, and piston do not have the close tollerances required of a good trigger so designing a drop-in unit would be near impossible.
The variation from one gun to the next is just too high.

Just my opinion.
