maine small game

howdy folks,

have a much looked forward to hunting trip to maine with my brother-in-law and was hoping to use the new .22 disco for squirrel/rabbit as pneaumatics have always been in the regs, in AZ. but after reading it does'nt seem ME. recognizes their use.

Howdy Dave. Welcome aboard. Are you saying there is no mention of air guns in the legal weapons  for small game section of the reg's?  If that's the case I'd try to contact someone in the Game and Fish dept. there for a definitive answer.Maybe on line.

no progun after reading and rereading no mention good or bad. leaving the end of this month and the state of Maine is notoriously slow at most everything. thought about email timmy but when we lived there it was more straightforward to talk directly to the warden for the area you're hunting and we always got straight answers. suppose I was hoping someone in the maine FG might read your gate and answer. might not be a bad thing to recruit some fish and game guys :)

Well Dave, if the Maine reg's give a list of what's legal to use and they specifically mention shotguns and rimfire rifles, but make no mention of air guns then I would take that to mean they are NOT legal for hunting.I'd still look for a definitive answer from a live person in F&G if you really had your heart set on using your Disco.Better safe than sorry when it comes to most things.If you are still unsure of the law when you make your trip, take the Disco with you just in case you find out once there that it is considered legal for small game.It would be a shame if the State of Maine in these here United States was so backward's and under educated in the F&G laws that they weren't aware of effective technology that's been around for oh about 500 years.

Well, I don't know if this helps any but I've recently emailed and asked about the rules and regs in Texas and this is what I got in return:

Means and Methods
Firearms
Game animals and game birds may be hunted with any legal firearm,
EXCEPT:

-white-tailed deer, mule deer, desert bighorn sheep, and pronghorn
antelope may NOT be hunted with rimfire ammunition of any caliber.

-shotguns are the only legal firearm that may be used to hunt Eastern
turkey during the spring Eastern turkey season (see County Listing).
Rifles and handguns may not be used to hunt Eastern turkey.

-pellet guns and other air guns are NOT LEGAL.

-fully automatic firearms are NOT LEGAL.

-firearms equipped with MuzzleBrakes or sound-suppressing devices are NOT
LEGAL.

-a shotgun is the only legal firearm for hunting migratory game birds
and lesser prairie chicken (see Definitions - Legal Shotgun).

Nongame Animals (Non-Protected): Any lawful firearm, pellet gun, or
other air gun is legal.

I'd say to hit your own states' Fish and Game department and try and find their "Means and Methods" section.  They should specify what'll fly and what won't.
