Pestin at the bosses house...
« on: October 09, 2008, 11:33:51 AM »

Was pretty much a bust but for one bright spot..The phone call from my boss was totally unplanned so I didnt have my camera or pump in the car...Got my first shot about 1/2 hour after arriving and setting up a bait station to lure the squirrels away from his pecan trees..The squirrel was a fence runner who then jumped to the pecan tree and went high stopping on a dead branch to look ..All I could see of him was his head peaking over the branch but thats good enough for me so I lined it up and let fly..Im not sure if the CPHP caught him full on or went through the dead branch and got him in the throat ...Either way he hung for a bit and then managed to disappear into the tree..Dammit first one lost !!! I rather miss every shot that wound one..After looking for about 20 minutes and settin a bit hoping to get sight of him we called it quits went back inside to look at a Crosman 1377 for him to have on the days im not there..We sat surfing and had a few beers when all of a sudden he starts hitting me and pointing out his window..WTF is that...Holy !@$^%$$ it's a white squirrel !! I quickly bailed from my chair and grabbed the B50 and a pellet as I ran through the kitchen..silently opened the back door and approached the right side of his pool/elevated deck hoping to use it as cover..As I got close to the pool and could see the tree where he was Sure enough he sat there lookin dead at me....Busted !! I froze !!! We both sat for awhile and then it happed...I had to pee....bad..Dang small bladder...He must have known I was bout to blow as he quickly rounded the tree and disappeared prolly laughing at the sight of me,legs crossed and on my tip toes..Well just as I was about to discharge that lone pellet and myself into the dirt of his backyard(hightech redneck) the lil devil pops back up 6 feet higher in a V.....mannnnnnnn come on !! ..Im now behind his pool and the squirrel is head down with a perfect backstop...Up comes the B50...15 yard shot ...Between the eye and the ear and exited into the tree...Man I was stoked...I skinned him there as it would be more than a hour till I got home..

That's a nice pelt.  I've never seen a white squirrel before.  Out of curiosity, what are you going to do with it?
Go git \'em!

That is one fine airgun trophy Brent !! Congrats......

The simple way to cure the hide is to stretch it on a board tacking the edges to keep it taught, then lay a coating of kosher salt on the hide.  Let it sit like that in a cool, dry place and let the salt do it's thing.

Of course you can also get a tanning kit and tan it,,, but either way that's a cool hide to display.....

That salt will work just fine.  Check the salt periodically,,,, it will draw all the moisture out of the hide,,,,, you will notice a visual change in the salt as it soaks up the moisture it's pulling from the hide,,,, not a bad idea to scrape off the original layer of salt after a couple of days and replace it with a new layer.  In the meantime get some kosher salt for the second layer,,,, the salt you've got on it now won't hurt anything and will do it's job of drawing out the moisture, but the kosher salt will work better.  Don't be stingy with the salt layer either,,,, a nick thick even layer is what you want.....

I WOULD APRECIATE IT DUDE!!!   It took 17 inches of scroll to get to the quote button on that one.....

Great pics and all but this format is set up  for 1 size and it makes it difficult to read the posts that are in responce to yours because it makes them all that size...  Sorry not bithin  just sayin..  sometimes the size doesn't matter...

Now that's a prize Brent:) Great shot and harvest. Those animals without the right skin/fur pigment don't last to long in the wild since they don't blend well.:( I think if he would have made it to winter and alittle snow he would have been alright hehe. Great! pic's and hunt Brent. Ed

Wow that's a rare find and kill!  Way to go.  I 've never seen a white squirrel either, only black ones, but not around here either, usually at parks.  Good shooting.  BTW what are those 2 little holes on either side of the skin?  :-)  just kidding.

As some others have said....never seen a white squirrel before....that`s a great unique speciman.  At first I thought it was just a white mouse.  Excellent shooting with you having to hold "it" in....you must`ve been trembling.   ha ha ha

That's one lily white rat. Didja dunk it in bleach?  I don't think anyone would have blamed you if you peed yourself in the interest of getting that albino tree rat.
