Gene tuned Whisper w/pics
« on: January 04, 2009, 09:41:50 AM »
Well, I got my whisper back from Gene the other day, and I'm quite impressed. I've been feeling down in the dumps lately due to a bear trap wire snapping in my BSA Lightning, but getting my whisper overhauled has brightened my day. After mounting a 4x16x50 Leapers, I ran it through the chrony for some numbers: First thing I noticed was the cocking action- MUCH smoother(although the force felt a little heavier, it should ease up over time) the firing cycle was a nice "thump", with hardly any noticeable torque or spring cant. The trigger felt great (already had the GRTIII, but it felt much better after Gene cleaned it up) Anyways, off to the chrony numbers.  I couldn't believe the consistency! I got an average of 912.3 fps with RWS Superdomes with a spread of 8.1. That's the TOTAL spread of a 10 shot string. the std deviation was @2.6fps, and it's not even broken in! Now it's off to the range- I ran the Superdomes, FTS, Predators, JSB Exacts, and CPL's, and they all did well. Surprisingle, the superdomes did the worst.... considering they were ballistically so consistent. The best groups I got were with the JSB Exacts (8.4g) and the Predators (see pic)
Overall, I think I made a wise decision sending it off to Gene. For the $225 I paid for the whisper + the $150 for the turbo tune, I got a rifle that will easily hang with my $450 BSA - even overtake it. It may not have the pretty stock of my Lightning, but I get the feeling it will take out more than it's share of gophers :)
(while my BSA was down and my whisper was with Gene, I got bored and made a gun rack out of some scraps.... hope you enjoy!)

CONGRATS Jason :) one of Genes tunes is the best thing you can give to your baby. :) It just makes for a more accurate and consistent shooter, amazing how a airgun responds to a great tune and also kick's up the confidence level on target's and game. Enjoy buddy and keep us posted on her progress. Ed

Congrats, Jason.
Good air rifle, good tuner, and good shooting.
