If money were no object which PCP would you buy?
« on: January 13, 2009, 04:08:51 AM »
I' am in a position to buy any PCP rifle I want.  I sold many of my powder burning guns which I do not use anymore, which leaves me with a bunch of money.  I want a .22 caliber mainly for hunting, quiet, accurate, powerful with no problems. Beating myself up trying to figure out which is best.

DarkSiders please advise,

Thanks,

Paul

Love my AA S410 - ERB side lever in .22.  I also shot Gene's FX Cyclone in .22.  Both are powerful, quiet and accurate.  Both are multi-shot repeaters.  But the best answer to your question will come from going out and shooting several different PCP's and deciding for yourself.  Others more knowledgeable than me will, no doubt, chime in.  As Joe points out, after doing some reading and comparing, I went for the AA-S410 ERB in a LH thumbhole stock.  Excellent air rifle.  See the DarkSide forum.  Pics posted there recently.

I'd buy an AA S410 Side Lever, a BSA Bull Barrel Super 10, or a BSA Bull Barrel Scorpion T10. Of course if I could wait a bit, I'd hold out for the new BSA R10..........  Lots of choices.....

Peakchick - When are the BSA R10 coming out?  Those Daystate's on AOA's website has me paying attention.  Very expensive though when you consider the support for them.  I guess it's the way they present them on their web site.  If they do not shoot any better than BSA's I don't want one.  Also what scope would you guys recommend?

Middle of this year on the R10 (Might be sooner, AOA would know). Here is the link to the R10 on the BSA site:

http://www.bsaguns.co.uk/gun_r-10.php

Scope wise, I'm a big fan of light weight, fairly compact scopes, and I don't need or use very high magnification on hunting rifles. I really like the Bushnell Trophy 4-12 x 40 AO. The new Burris Timberline 4.5-14 x 32 AO has gotten great reviews. The Leupold 3-9 x 33 EFR is pretty universally raved about.

there is a guy selling a really nice Rapid with all sorts of custom options on Airgunadvice.com ....  If you go to the for sale items. you will see it listed with all the photos.

Here is the add:

This is a Rapid MKII .22 caliber.  As will all my Rapids when I buy them brand new I have them shipped directly to Allen Zasadny to have him check it out, and do all his modifications Power adjustment, Shroud, Quick Fill, oversized bolt, the gun was purchased from Dave Slade.  The Stock is a Dave G. stock and I waited over a year for this one, little different then most of his you see, very unique, it has a very light adjustable recoil pad.  It also comes with a Bushnell 4200 Elite 6-24X40 scope with Mil Dot and a scope level.  It will be shipped in a Hard case.  Asking $2,300 + shipping & insurance.  If interested contact me through the PM function on the board.

That one is about double what I was planning to spend.  I ended up deciding on a AA410 Walnut, HOWEVER, there are NONE to be had currently.  So I'm waiting for one to arrive into the US to place an order.

...if money were no object. The 50 or 80FPE version in .22. That`s a sweet looking air rifle...with the power and accuracy to back her up. Read it`s abit front heavy with it`s 500cc air bottle. The pellet clip is quite long....so she can feed long pellets....I think she can take pellets that look like real bullets.

Daystate with out  question! I've always wanted one. But they are very pricey.  Next would probably be a BSA, Falcon or Rapid.  It also depends on what features you want too. Do you want adjustable power? Single shot, or multi shot? Bolt Action or semi-auto. Do you want a built in pressure gauge?( I highly recommend that feature) Removeable "buddy" bottle or not. Beech, walnut or synthetic stock. When I started my search for a PCP I started with a list of features I wanted and looked at the rifles that had all or most of them. Then I decided which if any I would be willing to do without. Then I looked at the rifle that gave me the most features I wanted for my budget. I ended up choosing a AA 410 ERB. Well good luck in your decision.

Nathan

I gotta tell`ya.  Dave recommended that I look at the FX Cyclone some time back

I did, and I worned him I was a very picky guy.

I haven't looked back since taking it out of the box.

It's just an abolutely superb & balanced system from muzzle to recoil (NOT) pad.

The FX Cyclone w/ synthetic stock is an ambi with raised cheek pieces and a comfy, soft padding on the forestock.  It is a nice gun to shoot, and I really liked Gene's when I shot it.  He can compare the FX Cyclone to the AA S410 heads up for you.  I like the wood stocks and opted for the thumbhole (my first).  I ended up liking the thumbhole more than I thought I would.

Let us know what you choose.

Exactly the one I was talking about!!  What an awesome gun.  I would love to have, but I already set my budget to the AA410, Cyclone Level of dollars only!  :(    ... But I agree that is a great looking gun with lots of fantastic options, scope, etc.  I believe it would take over $3000 to build one like that if you bought everything seperate and however long in waiting for the stock and the custom details to be completed...

I'm going to reiterate my recommendation to Mike about the FX Cyclone.  Certainly, it's more expensive than an AA, but it's a damn sight cheaper than a Daystate :-).  Anything the AA can do, the Cyclone can do, and maybe just a touch better.  I've never heard a complaint about the Cyclone mags indexing properly, my Cyclone gets more shots on less air than my AA S400E, and I think the trigger is slightly better.  Both my guns are .177's, the AA does 23 fpe with CPH's, the Cyclone does 21.  The AA doesn't have adjustable power, I think my Cyclone on full power is slightly quieter, on the lower power levels it's definitely quieter.  I wanted a multi shot field gun, the Cyclone fills the bill perfectly.  Light, well balanced, good pointer, I can even shoot it off hand, and I suck shooting off hand :-)!  Did I mention I really like my Cyclone?

For scopes, I have a Bushnell Legend 5-15x40, it's the only Legend that comes with a mil dot reticule.  I'd been shooting with the scope at 10X, but when I moved inside for the winter, I dropped it to 5x, and I haven't changed it, even when taking the occasional longer shot at a starling or sparrow.  Picked off a sparrow at about 45 yards and in the top of a tree on Sunday.  If you prefer something more compact, I'd go with Peaks recommendation for the Burris Timberline.  Good luck, and happy choosing!
