Predator vs. Tomahawk (Gamo)
« on: January 07, 2007, 01:57:51 PM »
Hi guys, I haven't posted in awhile, work has been crazy. I was shooting the Gamo tomahawk pellets a full lead version of the predator pellet. no plastic tip, all lead tip. I targeted a 1"-1.5" diameter stick in the backyard about 40 yards away and  put a couple of Tomahawk pellets into it then dug them out to see how they deformed.  Well the first thing that caught my eye was the lead tip still had a point. I thought for sure the tip would be flattened. Next was how the head of the pellet (minus the tip) expanded (about 1 1/2x  in size). Maybe because it was shot into wood (Hmmmm).  The accuracy I'm not sure of at this time. At $.01 a pellet it could be an alternate choice as a hunting pellet allowing the shooter plenty of target practice time without the (relatively) high price of the predator pellet. Somebody quick shoot a squirrel so we can do a comparison.
Any thoughts????

Bart
P.s. yes I know that the "test" was very unscientific.

Hi,
I was hoping someone would test these out.  I need to buy some I guess for my CFX.  It shoots predator well and I like them but it would be nice to have a second choice.  The predators are expensive and it's possible the Gamo's could perform similarly?  Anyone else used them?

Regards,

John

Hi John,

Funny you should mention using the Tomahawks in the CFX,,,, I was doing just that this afternoon,,, was shooting starlings in my backyard. Was knocking them out of the tree stone dead with single shots.  My CFX shoots superdomes, predators and the tomahawks absolutely fantastic.  Beautiful dime sized groups.  I've used the tomahawks on starlings and pigeons and they work well.  I like to use the tomahawks on pest birds because they are deadly accurate in my CFX and because they are dirt cheap.  My Shadow also shoots the tomahawks fantastic.

I've only taken 1 squirrel with a tomahawk, it was a while ago.  It was a 10 yard shot, hit the squirrel in the left shoulder, pellet went through the shoulder, through the body and exited through the opposite shoulder leaving a good sized, bleeding hole in the process.  Squirrel dropped dead as a stone.  It was only a 10 yard shot, and I know a longer shot would've been a better test of the pellet on tough skinned game, but it did do a heck of a job on that little bushytail.

I have way to may squirrels in my yard right now, and am in the process of trying to "thin out the herd", so next time I get the opportunity I'll fire up the CFX with a tomahawk and aim it at one of my pesky squirrels.  I'll make a post on how they perform.  I'll also run some through the chrony and see what kind of FPS they give me.

Hi Jeff,
Glad to hear the CFX shoots the Tomahawk well.  That's good enough for me to order a box and give it a shot.  I like the predator plenty but not so cheap and I need to widen the skirt slightly to get them to fire really well in my gun... a bit of work but not too bad.  If the tomahawks are similar in take down then that'd be great news.  Looking forward to your tomahawk vs. squirrel report!

Thanks

John

I have been shooting the Tomahawk in my QB78 with a .20 barrel and they get the best FPS and they are very accurate in my rifle and the price is right at Midsouth 4.99 a tin.

Do they expand?  How do the squirrels like them?  Just thinking of it versus the predator for hunting.

Thanks
