Use Nitrogen! The air we breath is 78% made of this stuff. Formula 1 racers fill their tires with it. It is heavier than O'2 but not as dangerous (oil and O'2 = BOOM!! ).

As PelletPaul said.....  Good question.  Not everyone knows that oxygen in airguns are dangerous.  I didn`t know until I read about it a few months ago.  Luckily I`m not the experimental type....and I don`t have access to O.

Nope, I still have all my appendages and plan on keeping it that way.

Bring to mind a very important point.  Please, people, READ THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL THAT COMES WITH YOUR NEW RIFLE!  This goes for any gun, springer, PCP, or powder burner.  I was surprised by the number of responders that weren't aware of the danger of using pure oxygen in a PCP.  If you bought your new shooter used and didn't get a manual, PA's web site has a bunch of manuals available on their site, just scroll to the bottom of the page.  Many manufacturers web sites also have manuals available for download, or will send one out free of charge.  I know, most of them have one paragraph of useful info buried in 20 pages of legal liability disclaimers or repetitious warnings, but that one paragraph could prevent damaging your rifle or yourself.  Better yet, do your homework before you get your new shooter.  With the ready availability of info via the WWW, there's really no excuse not to.  And remember, the most important safety is the one between your ears, keep it engaged at all times ;-)!  Later.

Pure oxygen is fine, as long as you mix it with the proper quantities of nitrogen, CO2, and other gases that make up atmospheric air.

RE: I use acetylene with pure oxygen for a cutting torch!
« Reply #20 on: April 25, 2009, 03:00:46 AM »
Oxygen is the catalyst that allows things to burn. There is no burning of anything in the absence of oxygen. Burning is nothing more than rapid oxidation.
And yes, you can cut steel without acetylene, once you get it burning. Acetylene is merely the fuel that heats the steel to the point of burning. The preheat oxygen allows the acetylene to burn efficiently and the bypass oxygen supports the burning of the steel once it heats to the point of burning. If you're skeptical about whether or not steel will burn, ask a blacksmith.
3n00n, have you seen the Petrogen OxyGasoline torches? Those things are awesome. I want one, but the price is preventing that. Guess I'll have to stick with my oxy acetylene torches for now.

Damn, Jeremy, that's exactly the kind of post that gets people in trouble!  All they see is the first part, "pure oxygen is fine", and stop reading.

Not to beat a dead horse, but the ONLY thing the manufacturers approve for use in PCP's is clean, dry, compressed air.  Some specifically include pure nitrogen, and some will also work with CO2.  That's it, anything else violates the warranty, and has the potential of getting someone killed.  'Nuff said (I hope!)
