Has anyone used pure oxygen??
« on: April 02, 2009, 02:36:09 AM »
I can get a tank of oxygen 200 CF for $12 That is comparable to getting a scuba tank filled. Has anyone used pure oxygen to charge their PCP's

Al

Or is this an April Fools joke?  Do NOT, under ANY circumstances, use pure oxygen in any PCP.  The slightest bit of oil, and you WILL have a bomb go off in your face.  This applies to any volatile or oxidizing gas.  ONLY use compressed air or pure nitrogen.  Yes, there are other INERT gases that people have used for various reasons, but hopefully they know what they're doing.  There used to be a pic floating around the forums of a high end rifle that someone filled with oxygen.  Don't know if the owner received his Darwin award posthumously or not, but the rifle looked like someone had used it for practice with a cutting torch, or like the left over pieces of some terrorist bomb.  This is no joke, this kind of stupidity kills people.  My apologies if I offended anyone.

I have used oxygen in hybred rocket motors, both liquid and compressed gas.  A rocket motor is just a controlled bomb.  We would always flush the fuel lines with dry nitrogen before fueling, or you would get an explosion, and not a flight!  David is very correct!  Any oil, oil vapor, rubber, gell, anythying that can burn in the gun or chamber will cause an explosion with compressed oxygen.  You don't really have to be a rocket scientist to figure this one out...compressed oxygen...and any flammable substance...is a bomb! Oh and by the way...an exploding bomb!  In school demos I used to do a Liquid Oxygen show in Rocketry programs.  I would dip a cotton ball in liquid oxygen...then light it with a torch..BANG!!  I would pour a little liquid oxygen into a thimble of Vaseline...then hit it with a hammer...BANG!!!  Now what would happen to a rubber, or plastic seal when suddenly hit with 2000 psi of oxygen...Bang!  When fueling rockets people have been killed when they spilled liquid oxygen on asphalt...and then stepped on the mess...big BANG!!  The fire in Apollo 1 was caused by plastic and rubber burning (very fast) in a pure oxygen atm.  Fuel a PCP with compressed oxygen...well how much dynamite would that equal when you touch her off?  Maybe parts of the gun might be moving 2000 fps initially.  David you should not pull any punches on this one...even from an idiot one can learn what not to do.

I use acetylene with pure oxygen for a cutting torch!

Of course, you don't want to try this at home, kids, unless you've received proper training and follow industrial gas safety precautions . . .

3nOOn:
When cutting with a torch...once you have the temp, and start cutting...is it true you cut off the acetylene, and burn through the steel using pure oxygen?  The steel "burns" in the oxygen and acetylene is not needed anymore.

When the metal starts 'burning', oxy is the accelerant.
« Reply #8 on: April 02, 2009, 11:00:11 AM »

Typical .020" tip mix is 5psi acetylene / 12psi oxygen with a 50 / 50 mix heater nozzle that 'blows' 12psi oxygen to burn the metal 'through' when the bypass lever is engaged.

In my high school shop class, almost back in the Dark Ages, the metal shop teacher wanted to demo the power of oxy-acetylene.

He filled a balloon with acetylene and torched it.  It went Poof!

He filled a balloon with oxygen and torched it. It went POOF!

He filled a balloon with oxy-acetylene and torched it.  All the windows were blown out of the shop.  No one got hurt, but the teacher wasn't in the school the next year.  Wonder if that was coincidence?

Oxygen, itself, doesn't burn.  But it accelerates the burn rate of virtually anything else--like seals in guns and metal gun barrels and stuff like that.

Ride Safe.  Ride Responsibly.  Ride Ethically.  Ride Legally.  When you have those mastered, HAVE FUN!

Good question Al.  From the reaction of our fellow members I probably would not use pure oxygen.  No questions is a dump question.  Thanks for your post.        Paul

Heavens NO. In the USAF we used to fill the pilots breathing bottles with Liquid O2 and one guy spilled a little on the ground. It ignited when coming into contact with the grease and oil. Bad news dude. We also had one guy slam a sputtering liquid O2 bubble on the tarmac and it blew his heel off the boot. What a site to see!

If you want the perfect GAS supply use.............Nitrogen! the atmosphere is 78% nitrogen and formula 1 race cars use it in their tires. Great compression and it doesnt mess up the atmosphere. This gas is heavier than O'2 but you can fill your tanks and have a blast with no dieseling! .
