stock vs. tune
« on: May 05, 2009, 05:04:33 PM »
Its me again, this time I'm curious how much of a velocity gain will I get with a tune vs. no tune.  I know the gamo #'s are slightly inflated, but will they actually go up with, say, a turbo tune?  Based on a whisper in .22.  I'm thinking of not only nutters, but also crows and maybe even a rocky (racoon).  Big problem at friends farm with rocky wanting horse feed more than the horses.

Once again, thanks in advance!
Scott

cant really say much but the difference between the tune and untune is that once you shot a tune gun you probably dont want to go back with the untune gun..thats just my opinion..

Hello Scott. There is a good chance that your velocity won't go "up" at all with a "turbo-tune". Unless of course your stock gun is performing below par as would be the case with a broken spring or bad seal issues. What you WILL get though is a gun that will likely be a much smoother performer with less vibration and "twang" and that might help you to shoot the gun more accurately.Especially true if your tuner replaces your stock Gamo trigger with a GRT111 trigger. If you really want more velocity and power than what the "Whisper" is designed to produce you would be better off to upgrade to a real magnum class of air rifle that has a more powerful power plant than your "Whisper" can produce.JMO.

Well that makes sense.  I cant afford to get a PCP TalonSS just quite yet.  I'm thinkin a shot to the fuse box should just about take care of things.  I'm likin the whisper due to the neighbor factor, although, I do realize it won't be quiet - just quieter.

A typical "1000 fps" springer in .177 will produce somewhere around 14 fpe in the real world, with some luck and the right tune, maybe a touch more.  That's more than enough to take a raccoon out to 20, maybe 30 yards if you do your job.  In .22, you MIGHT gain a couple of fpe, but at the cost of a much loopier trajectory.  Bear in mind, the Gamo power plant is the same, regardless of caliber.  BTW, from what I've seen/heard, the Whisper isn't that much quieter than a standard springer.  IMO, it's just sales hype.  Most of the noise from a springer is from the power plant, anyway.  If you're serious about a medium power hunting springer, you might want to consider something in .20 cal.  A little more knockdown power, a little flatter trajectory, might be just the ticket.  But if you're REALLY serious, save your pennies until you can afford that Talon SS in .22 ;-).  Or maybe a new Crosman Marauder, I think the price is going to be about the same.  Later.

So a Big Cat isn't much louder than the Whisper?  I've got some (not all) really snooty neightbors and don't need the greif !! (or the nutters)

Just one man's opinion here. Was shooting a whisper next to a Daisy 880. The whisper has had about 2000 pellets though it. The 880 was being pumped 10 times. The whisper is quite, just a thud sound, the 880 was much loud. I took one of my kid toys to stuff the rifle stock. The stuff is almost like a sticky type of Styrofoam that they can form it to shapes, It worked pretty good.

I had a Phantom Turbo Tuned - it's "smoother operating", "maybe" a tad easier to cock, has much better accuracy - and about the same FPS with .177 of course. ... I also have a Whisper, and shooting either the Phantom or Whisper indoors, (35 feet) - I don't think the Whisper is much quieter, almost can't tell them apart

Hey scott, You may get more fps with a tune but really what it is doing is making gun work smoothly and consistant ( same velocity every time) so that you hit where you aim. Some people even detune for accuracy reasons. A standard untuned airgun twists, creaks and clanks very bad for decent accuracy!! I think a tune  also helps scope life,  All my broken scopes have been on untuned airguns!:) The GRTIII trigger is a must do. You will need to experiment and find the best pellet for your gamo also will help. Hope that helps,Tony.
