Shooting my new B3 underlever
« on: May 17, 2009, 07:19:37 AM »
This morning, I tried shooting my new B3. I decided to go ahead and try the open sights, even though my eyesight is maddeningly bad. I had cleaned the barrel with GooGone/weedwhacker/patches, and whipped off external oil. So I put my little portable bench rest on my table out back and set up a large piece of cardboard for my first shots. I tried some Crosman Premier wadcutters at first. The gun shot maybe 6-8 inches to the right with elevation okay. I started adjusting to get the pellets hitiing farhet left, but ran out of adjustment still maybe 4 inches too far to the right. But I did get some good groups (10 yards), including a nice one with RWS Hobbys.I decided the gun might deserve a scope, so I mounted my brand new Leapers 3x9 with adjustable objective as far to the rear as I could get away with.I then did some sight in shots. The scope wasn't too far off.
Then I started to try different pellets. To my dismay, I was getting better groups with the open sights! Its my typical experience with springers. I get my hopes up, decide to put a scope on, and then the good groups just don't happen. I get great groups from my scoped Remington Airmaster multi pump. So I went on like this for a bit., not very happily. I can't seem to get anything to group well. Then, just for the heck of it, I decided to scrap the rest, and try a large rolled up bath towel. Also, as a long shot, I decided to try a few of my Crosman Premier hollow points, the ones that I can't get any airgun to shoot even half way well. About this time, my neighbor, whom I call Mr. Magoo, since he is old (unlike my own young 55 year old self), hard of hearing, and mumbles very loudly and unintelligably, decides to come outside. I seriously don't think he knows I'm shooting airguns because we have a high fence, and his bad hearing. But I figure he'll be having other people come out with him, si I decide to try one last three shot group before I wrap it up.
I take a small piece of photography paper and draw a black bullseye with marking pen maybe 1 1/4" in diameter and use a six o'clock hold, and fire a three shot group..................into one very, very small hole!!!!!! Is it the pellets or the rolled up towel? I don't know, but I had to pick up my stuff for now. I'll get back to it as soon as I can, but I at least ended on a very high note!!
Here's some of my thoughts about the gun:
1.It's pretty rough. The stock has some crappy spots on it for sure. I am considering some of that bedliner/paint maybe.
2.It is a little hard to load, especially with the fairly ling Leapers scope I installed. But I worked out a system. Don't worry, I know to hold the underlever securely while putting my fingers into the breech area to load. I can do it with this big scope.
3.I am hoping I'm onto something either with the rolled up towell, or the Crosman Prem Hollow Points. The last group I got was great.
4.What I wasn't prepared for was the trigger. I have a Crosman 1077, a Beeman 1024, and a Remington Aurmaster. The B3 easily has the best trigger of these guns, with the Remington a close second. Then the 1077, and last, the Beeman. The Beeman requires so much effort, that the tip of my right index finger is getting permanently "tingly".The trigger on the B3 is very nice.
5.It is pretty loud.I was hoping someone wouldn't think I was shooting a .22 Short or something.
6.It does have a little smoke coming out of the breech after a shot, but so did my Beeman soringer (it now has maybe 500 shots through it).
7.If this gun loves the Crosman Premier hollow points, then I will buy a bunch. My other guns HATE these pellets, and I was just going to use them up.I am kind of having to use a scope because it shoots so far right with the open sight adjusted all the way. But if this last group is any indication, then this gun can group. This group is just slightly larger than the best I've shot with an airgun (Remington Airmaster with Gamo Hunters, three shots center to center of 0.0").
    8.For $25.00, what the heck.

Sounds like your off to a good start Jon, keep running some lead through and you'll find some that work. The B's take some time to get used to the loading process but you'll get it down and as mentioned before they are tunable which improves the shooter a bunch. I own four of them and one is always getting mod's and updates, here's one that had a TF stock reworked for a lefty, shortened barrel with custom goodies inside and out. Ed

My cousin just gave me a 15 year old B3 from Cummings Tool just today!

Gun cost 15.99 in 1990.

Shoots about ~380-400fps.  High and to the right at 10 yards by about 2 inches both directions.  Barrel probably needs to be bent and moving the foresight clamp on the barrel.  The rea-rsight isn't that bad, aside for the lack of horizontal adjustment.

I'm not one to put a $50 scope on a $15 rifle, so my hopes with this one is to get nice with iron sights at 20 yards.  I figure a deburr, lube tune and spring/seal will get it close to 500fps with CPLs.

I'm going to tune it, and bend the barrel to get the iron sights zeroed.  Going to do a major searching here.  I'll post back the links if you want.

One thing about the B3 you MUST realize.  They are cheap, fun and great to learn tuning, BUT they are notorious.  Guys have had their thumbs and fore-fingers AMPUTATED while loading them.  They are not a good kid gun at all, In My Not So humble Opinion (IMNSHO), unless you don't mind your kids with 9 fingers!  Not only the threat of losing your finger, but they are also notorious for slapping your hand with the cocking lever!  They have few safety features at all.  Thank goodness they don't have a 16fpe spring!  (Stock they have about a 5 or 6 fpe spring, IIRC.)

You don't have the same issues with TX200, HW95, B40s, RWS52s, etc. or any break-barrel rifle.

They are sure fun to work on, but HOLD THE COCKING LEVER while you load them!

You can do a search about lost fingers and the B3 and get a lesson!  Respect this rifle and ALL safety issues an air rifle presents!

That said, I need a lesson on bending the barrel to correct the accuracy issues, and what seal and spring tune kit is the one to get?

Have fun with her, and do be very very careful...

Crap! I haven't even put but maybe 50 pellets through this gun, and it's out of commission! I sat down to shoot it late today to retry some pellets using a towel as a rest, and the groups were terrible. I then notices the small rubber/synthetic seal that is attached to the metal peice that slides to the rear when you pull the underlever down, is shreading itself badly. It's coming apart. I'm sure it's not doing its not able to seal anything.

What now? Get ahold of Toolsnow.com I guess?? My Beeman 1024 may not be a tack driver, but it hasn't skipped a beat in probably 500-600 rounds fired.

This has put a big damper on my day.

Call up "tools Now"  and tell them that the breach seal is shredded and falling apart and as a result the gun won't work properly.  Don't be surprised if they send you a new gun and tell you to keep the old one as well.

I ordered a B-3 from them and when I got it the rear sight was broken.  I called them up and asked if they could send me a new rear sight.  They said they didn't have any replacement parts so they would just send me a new rifle,,,, and they told me to just keep the old "broken" one.   ;)

Give em a call, ya got nothin to lose.....

I actually emailed them last night, and figured I'd follow up with a phone call today if I got no response. Well, I got up this morning and found an email from Suzan at Toolsnow.com. They are sending me another gun on Tuesday and she said to hold onto the first one until I get the second one and make sure it works okay.If they don't make me return the first, then I think I'll try my first "lube and tune" on it. As I said, it showed good signs of being accurate, even with me shooting it with open sights-I got a really nice group with RWS Hobbys, and the one really great group scoped with the Crosman Premier Hollow Points, and then accuracy went to hell as the seal came apart.
I'd say Toolsnow.com has fine customer service, and it looks like they are taking good care of me. I'll say this-they shipped the first one way faster than any order I've placed with Pyramidair.com (though they are great at customer service too).
So, I'll wait for the second gun and start the process all over again.

Good :)

I don't think they're gonna want the "broken" one back..... if they're selling them for $30 bucks apiece can you imagine how little they must be paying for them  :)  ?

Let us know what happens....

They are probably buying them at $5 bucks a piece wholesale.

Certainly not worth the trouble of shipping it back and forth.
The shipping costs are 10 times the gun is worth.

Told you they are "disposable" guns.

When I go to gunbroker.com and see them up for auction
starting at 60 bucks, I just laugh my arse off.

In case they don't want me to ship it back, and that sounds likely, where can I get more breech seals for mine? Can I try to find a regular O-ring of the correct diameter?? Can one of these be taken apart without a "spring compressor"? Is there some other kind of tool that could do it? C-clamps?

  Thanks Jon

Look in the "Library" section of the forum, I believe
there are links there on how to build a rudimentary
spring compressor.

If you don't know what you're doing, don't risk getting
injured over a 25 dollar rifle.

I wouldn't sell my eyesight for 10 million bucks. The thought of that
spring going BOIIIIING and impaling my eyeballs is enough for me
NOT to try tuning my springers, compressor or not.
