Tarantulla springs
« on: June 16, 2009, 12:43:41 PM »
Today after work, I decided it was time to take a look inside my hot-rod shooter (my beloved Sierra-Pro)that ain't running like she used to. The worst part of the ordeal was removing the scope. Not for damage, but because I had it set for so long, and zeroed in as bout as good as I could ever get for hunting. But anyways,...after removing the broken trigger assembly and sliding the custom spun delrin guide out,...I removed the Tarantulla spring and measured it. It was 9 1/4" at a full expansion. Does this sound like the spring has lost its "punch"? I looked at the ARH site but it doesn't give a spring length,...just coil count, wire diameter, and ID/OD dimensions. I tried to pull the piston out, but without useing a allen wrench to budge it,..it felt like it still had a tight seal within the compression chamber. Any thoughts or ideas would be great!!!! Thanks, tjk

The JM tarantula springs measure new at 12 1/4"  Thomas. Your spring is set and tired...:) Normally when they are set after a tune they are around 10.5" long. Hope that helps.

Thanks Gene!! Sounds like I need a new Spring for sure. But now I'm wondering if I should bother trying to replace the seal. That old 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' adage comes to mind. Think I'll order both and try a fresh spring out first. If that doesn't do the trick I'll tear her the rest of the way down and give her a complete over-haul. The Sierra-Pro has been a faithful hunting companion,...so it's a given that she deserves a lift!!!! Now if I can only get a new trigger assembly?!?!?!? !-800 Crosman???LOL's Thanks a million Gene!!!, Thomas

For peace of mind I would go ahead and change the seal. If you have not used a Tesla that is a good seal to replace the old blue Apex seal wth. Just my personal thoughts since you are going to pull it all down anyway.
