I Played "Disco Dress Up" Today :)
« on: August 23, 2009, 11:01:45 AM »
Well,,, all these posts from the others here with all the nice work they been doing lately got me itching to get going!! So today after lunch,, I fired up me tools & started sanding on me Disco stock!!Now,, I had big plans for this stock but,, I took the easy way out & only gave her a moderate upgrade. as I wanted to finish today. The "white" looking wood spacers are acually pine,,,,I know,,, pine Ya say?? Well,, I aint gots me no maple in stock!! They are paint paddles edge glued together,,, hey man,,,"Run What Ya Brung"!! LOL!! I do have plenty of cherry & that is what the forend is. Kinda crazy choice I know but,,, what can I say,,, I build me stocks under the ole oak tree!!Anyway,,,, a few hours later & she has the first coat of sealer on her. Lots more sanding & several coats of poly & I think she will be a big improvement over factory. For very little time invested I am happy with how she is comming along. One of these days I am gonna take my time on one & really do something nice,,, in the meantime,, I like: start after lunch,,, finish before dinner!!Tim.

Hey Timmy, When you guys are putting them tips on em,are you cutting the whole tip off and gluing another on? Or are ya doing what I was planning to do on my Gamo hunter stock, and just cutting a mortise into it and gluing in a veneer?AKJC1977

Congratulations on another great job.  That is a very classy looking stock.

Also like the handle insert on your utility knife; did you make that, too?

Jason,,, I cut about 2 inches off the forearm. If you look at the pic with the utility knife in it you will see the un shaped add on pcs. I use epoxy with a short hardwood dowel drilled into the center of the add on pc. for extra reinforcement. I then use the knife to carve most exess matirial & then "get my sand on"!!Thermon,, about that knife,,, no I did not do the handles on it,, I bought it from Ace Hardware for $8!!What a deal huh?? I just slipped the Disco back together to get an idea how she is gonna look. After several coats of poly on the stock & a good spin polish on the shroud I think she may turn out ok. I will get back to work on her soon. Tim.

I like her a lot better than my Disco.
Great job, Tim.

I also cut off the forend, and attach a new one with a wooden pin between the two pieces.
Do you need some Maple, I have extra.

Now you know what a fun project re-styling a stock can be, but I normally take days on one, sometimes weeks, LOL.

Cheers, David.
