WW2 Planes overhead.
« on: October 16, 2009, 09:00:47 AM »
Just had several old war planes fly over at very low alltitude.  They  sounded like a herd of Harley motorcycles.  Low  Cloud cover must have kept them lower than normal.
There is a "Fly IN" this weekend at Daniel Field  ( Augusta, Georgia ) and they seemed to be heading that way.
Those old fighters are something else.
Gentleman of Fortune.

Hum-bug!

There's nothing like the sound of a RR  Merlin...
About 3 miles from my house theres a air feild " Omarka" that is home
to the largest fleet of WW1 fighters in the southen hemisfre..
Plus a P51/P40 some Russan fighter & a Spitfire at times..

almost every week end theres something flying around..

Omarka has a good web site....

A few years ago, I was out on a Saturday road testing a customer's car and happened on the local air field's air show.

They had a B17 and a Russan "Yack" (?) cargo bi-plane. Suposed to be the biggest bi-plane ever built.

I was surprised at see how small the B17 looked walking around under it. They look so much bigger in movies. They wanted $15.00 to walk through, so I just walked under and around.

There also was a twin engine executive jet. I didn't know it was there until I heard this sqeaking noise behind me while I was looking up at the B17 starboard engines. There was a slight breeze blowing from behind the jet and it's starboard engine vanes were spinning in time with the sqeak. Hearing the sqeak, I thought there's no way I'd ever get in that thing !!!!

Looked beyond the jet to the parking lot and there was a bigger crowd around the 1932 air craft motored car I'd just driven in.

Wish I could have heard that B17 fly over. All I got to hear that day  was a darn sqeak of modern engineering ... and the sweet purr of a 1932 air cooled motor !  :D

Really great to hear & see Bogey - enjoy. - The B-17 Memphis Belle (same exact model)  and a B-24 Liberator (the Dragon & His Tail) plus WWII fighters have flown in here for an air show for years, - unbelievable!!! Neither has been here recently unfortunately. ... During WWII my father was in the 8th Air Force, 466th Heavy Bombardment Group - stationed in Attlebridge (sp) England - they flew Liberators not B-17's, the most common bomber in the European Theater. - If you get a chance - go see them!! -  I've been in both of them, on the ground that is. The B-24 is a LOT roomier than the B-17 - but the 17 was one tough old bird.

About six or seven years ago the then Confederate Air Force had a fly in at the local airport.  Among the planes was a Japanese torpedo bomber in green with the red meatball.  Talked with the pilot/owner and it turned out to be the same plane used in both Pearl Harbor movies.  Also got to tour a large German transport (which I swear I recently saw in some show on the History Channel).  My son got to meet one of the Tuskegee Airmen, as well.  I think it made the guy's day when he started rattling off facts about them.  I don't think anyone else there had a clue as to who they were.  Next day, I heard a rumbling airplane engine and looked out the door to see the Japanese plane making a turn to fly back to the airport, probably as part of a re-enactment.  I called my son and he ran out with his grease gun (quite realistic) and proceeded to shoot him down.  Not every day you can do that.

"Yacks" called after Bison-like long haired animal - Yack, so it makes sense.

I have no WW II or any other old planes around me.. But I usually see apache helicoptes, CH-47 Chinook, and F-16's that fly over the house really low.. they fly over 3-8 at a time...really cool to see and hear.. you can usually hear them coming before you see them
