.22 cal, Discovery PCP?
« on: December 02, 2009, 03:03:53 AM »
Hi Air Gunners,
Since I'm not an air gunner, I thought I would ask you folks for opinions, advice, and comments on the '22 Discovery PCP.
Based on price alone, I chose the Discovery with the pump  as a package. I saw an unanswered post about a Hill pump, and whether it would be better to buy the Hill pump separate from the gun.
I would like to hear some comments on that also.
I guess I should say the primary purpose of buying the rifle will be hunting, followed by target practice to get ready for hunting, and then just plinking.
In the same price range as the .22 Discovery, is there a better PCP air rifle and pump out there? (even a little more money?)

A little off topic, my wife and I live in Alaska, but we are at our son's home in Charlotte NC (the Mathews, Mint Hill side) until he completes his Army training schools. We are taking care of the grand daughters, as his wife works full time.  I would enjoy meeting and maybe shooting with air gunners in the Charlotte area, or even beyond.

         Thank you.

FOR A LITTLE MORE GET THE BENJAMIN MARAUDER .22.  IT IS A 10 SHOTS SHOTER AND POWERFUL THAN THE DISCOVER.  I OWN A .177 AND I LOVE IT.

THE PRECISION IS A KILLER.  YOU CAN CHECK FOR SALES AIRGUN DEPOT, PYRAMID AIR OR DIRECTLY FROM CROSMAN THE DISTRIBUITOR.

If you would like a stock with more meat to it and even a better factory trigger I would suggest the Benji Kantana which is a Disco with nicer stock. Still light weight and just as powerful as a stock Disco.

Also for an even nicer PCP as GERALD mentioned the Maurader. Both still close within the price range with a 10 % discount from Pyramyd Air.

All three guns are an exceptional buy..:)

The Disco in 177 was my first PCP airgun. The Discos do have a lot more punch than  springers. I have killed a few groundhogs with mine, but they where headshots. Under less than perfect hunting conditions you are correct to chosse the 22 over 177. The Downside of the Disco model is the plastic trigger-it is very basic and can be improved, it is the 'home tuners Hot Rod' of PCP. The Maruader comes out of the box with a wonderful trigger, a little better barrel and is much quieter. Price with a pump is about $700, so the Disco at $399 wins on price. If you can swing it, the Marauder or the Katana (the middle sister) offer more out of the box accuracy.

I'm more inclined to use a single shot than a multi shot rifle, so the discovery and the Katana will be the ones I look at first .  I like the idea of the better stock, so I'll check out the Katana a bit more.
Since the basic action is the same for both guns, is there anything I should know about the function of the gun, parts that need upgrading, etc.?   Should I think of buying a different pump or stay with the unit that comes with the gun?
Thank you for the replies. Please keep them coming.

I have two Discos and love them. The .22 was tuned by Mike T so the "trigger" is good, not an issue and mouse fart quiet. The .177 is stock, not tuned or blessed by anyone and it is just as accurate but the trigger is heavy, easy fix. I bought these for hunting and plinking and both do the job. I prefer a single shot and a compact rifle hence the Disco.

I had a Disco pump and never had a problem but sold it. I now have a FX pump and find it easer to pump. A lot of guys have had trouble with the Disco pump.

Here are some 30 yard 3 shot groups. I feel I would have to spend hundreds of dollars to improve on them.

I bought my Hill pump used for $185, total with shipping was $205

Bought a trigger kit from TKO22 for $14 bucks, if i remember clearlyAnd a tko brake for $42 bucks, makes it backyard freindly.Shipping is included in his prices.

I reccomend buying the Disco from Mac1, with the accuracy prep for $275 http://www.mac1airgun.com/retailprices.htm

GO FOR THE ACCURACY PREP:Mac1 goes thru the gun and makes all the adjustments, for the $275you get alot for your money

This is how I am building my setup disco in .177

If you cant DAZZLE\'em with brilliance, BAFFLE\'em with B.S!!

Hi Gorden. The good thing about the Discovery or Katana is you only have to pump them to 2,000 pounds. I have the Discovery .177 because I don't hunt much. You won't be dissapointed with the Discovery, for the price it can't be beat. I have heard the the Hill Pump is suppose to be better than Discovery Pump but I don't know for sure.  If the Discovery Pump ever goes bad it can be rebuilt. I rebuilt mine and it now works better than it did than when it was new.

Your targets are super. Thank you for sharing that. How many different brands of pellets did you go through before you got groups like that?
Thanks also for your thoughts on the pump.

Those were shot with JSB's. I think the .22 is 14.5 grains and the .177 is 10.5. They seem to shoot good out of all my air rifles.

Hilman76, Thank you for all that information. I'm not up to speed on aftermarket triggers or muzzel breaks, but I'm sure as I correspond with all of you, I'll
learn a lot. Thank you.

kf9vh, I have an idea I will be shooting this rifle far more than my .35 Whelen. :o)  Are the JSBs available in larger bulk boxes. I have seen a bulk box of pellets for sale in my web surfing for air guns and scopes.

Could you share information on scopes with me. I did not address that when I first posted, but my bifocal eyes did not do well with iron sights the other day at the rifle range.

Thank you.

On the pump, buying new? Crosman seems to have a good warrenty (however I recall shipping North of Fairbanks seeming high?). I have had two FX pumps , one lasted 4 1/2 years pumping at LOT (big bores included and no scuba anywhere near), still have but dont use the newer FX which came with a guage that read 60bar low -stuff happens-.
The Disco is nice and light, single shot suits you, the formerly much nicer trigger of the original few Mardurs is gone and the "better" trigger bearks close to 40 oz, the Disco is a lot of plastic but with the three screw mod (2 screw mod from the Library here : http://www.spiralsol.com/airgunmod/1005.pdf
 it is better.
"is there a better PCP air rifle and pump out there? (even a little more money?) "  maybe a Bam, it too weighs more than the Disco, but a simple hammer spring cgange and it runs of 2000psi, stock trigger adjust to 7 ounces, another link from the library on tuning a Bam :
http://www.klickcue.com/air_rifle/b50_51/technical_details_for_adjusting_the_bam_b50_51.pdf
A Bam with a good bit of work in it using the simplee to preform mods in ChrisK's" bam book".
http://www.gatewaytoairguns.com/airguns/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=23161&posts=7#M185010
And for a Scope the under $50.00 delivered Hawke Sport HD 3-9x40 work great for me:
http://www.gatewaytoairguns.com/airguns/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=21630&mid=172641#M172641

And remember this is the only airgun you will ever "need" so buy one they are worth the money in good times to be had.

I couldn't edit my top post to add the TKO22 web site, check out there trigger kit and brake.

Once my parts come in, I'm sending them to Mac1 to install the same time hes doing the accuracy prep on my .177 disco. http://www.tko22.com/
