B-3's First Hunting Trip
« on: March 30, 2007, 11:39:08 AM »
After lunch I packed up the B-3, a tin of Tomahawk pellets and headed for the duck farm.  This was the guns first pest control outing.  I arrived at the duck farm and parked my truck near the group of old dead trees that the starlings use as a nesting site.  I loaded the gun, reclined the truck seat back a little bit so I would have a better angle to shoot out the window, and waited.  There weren't a lot of birds today, but there were enough that I knew I get a shot or two.

After 5 minutes 2 starlings landed in the top of one of the trees.  The distance was 25 yards.  I put the crosshairs on the bird that gave me the clearest shot, held my breath, squeezed the trigger and the gun fired.  A split second later hear that beautiful "POP" sound as the tomahawk pellet slammed home into the birds chest.  The bird clung to the branch for a second, then did a death dive into the dirt.  Whoo Hoo  :)

Waited for another 30 minutes but no more birds landed.  I think it was because there were some farm workers doing work outside of one of the barns nearby.  I figured I'd just take a walk around and see what targets presented themselves.

As I was approaching one of the feeders I noticed a squirrel having a feast at the feeder.  If he's eating duck grain that makes him fair game so I got ready and planned my approach.  He saw me approaching and headed for the nearest tree, a large oak, and scurried up to the top.  It took me about 2 minutes to locate him clinging to a branch and another 20 minutes of hiding motionless before he made the fatal mistake of sticking his little noggin around the branch to see if I was still there.

Put the crosshairs just below his ear, pulled the trigger and sent the tomahawk on it's way.  Heard the pellet smack into his head, he clung on for a second or two, then dropped like a stone.  Distance was 20 yards.  I was amazed at the amount of blood spewing out of the wound.  The pellet struck right where I aimed and must've hit some kind of major artery, the pictures show why.

That was the last target I could find so I headed home to take pics of the B-3's first kills.  Did I say I love this little gun??  :)

I gotta hand it to ya, Jeff, that does NOT look like a $20 rifle!  Beautiful job, and it looks like it shoots half way decent, too :-)!  Looking forward to B3 #2.

Thanks Dave,, it really does shoot nice and extremely accurate.  Gonna start on B-3 #2 in a day or so, still trying to come up with a camo pattern that I like.  I never did any camo stuff before so I'm probably gonna have to pry some secrets out of Ed :)

Hay Ed,

I'm spending way too much time reading all the posts on the B-3, hech I didn't even hear BROW SANTA at my door this morning.

And you make some mighty fine drawings of those shooters. I might even learn to tune mine.

You say blood spewed out of the wound?

I'd say you hit a mjor vein, not an artery. Judging from your account and from the condition of the squirrels fur I will submit, to you, that you transected the External Jugular vein.

This is not to discredit the fact that you killed the $hit out of that squirrel. The point of this reply is only to be more anatomically correct.

You see, if you had transected the common carotid artery, there would have been more spurting than spewing. There would also be less blood in the squirrels fur, for the reason that, arterial pressure would have forced the blood further from the squirrel's body upon transection of this major artery.

Excellent kill brother,

From what I hear BIG BILL, your a tall guy and I'm assuming you have a long reach also. I don't Know if you've ever seen those target air rifles that have a but plate that extend's out of the back of the stock with to rod's, making it longer. Might have to mod something up for yourself buddy. Ed

Hey Bill,

Yeah, the B-3 stock does seem to be a little short, but  I'm of average build and find it comfortable.
