After lunch I packed up the B-3, a tin of Tomahawk pellets and headed for the duck farm. This was the guns first pest control outing. I arrived at the duck farm and parked my truck near the group of old dead trees that the starlings use as a nesting site. I loaded the gun, reclined the truck seat back a little bit so I would have a better angle to shoot out the window, and waited. There weren't a lot of birds today, but there were enough that I knew I get a shot or two.
After 5 minutes 2 starlings landed in the top of one of the trees. The distance was 25 yards. I put the crosshairs on the bird that gave me the clearest shot, held my breath, squeezed the trigger and the gun fired. A split second later hear that beautiful "POP" sound as the tomahawk pellet slammed home into the birds chest. The bird clung to the branch for a second, then did a death dive into the dirt. Whoo Hoo :)
Waited for another 30 minutes but no more birds landed. I think it was because there were some farm workers doing work outside of one of the barns nearby. I figured I'd just take a walk around and see what targets presented themselves.
As I was approaching one of the feeders I noticed a squirrel having a feast at the feeder. If he's eating duck grain that makes him fair game so I got ready and planned my approach. He saw me approaching and headed for the nearest tree, a large oak, and scurried up to the top. It took me about 2 minutes to locate him clinging to a branch and another 20 minutes of hiding motionless before he made the fatal mistake of sticking his little noggin around the branch to see if I was still there.
Put the crosshairs just below his ear, pulled the trigger and sent the tomahawk on it's way. Heard the pellet smack into his head, he clung on for a second or two, then dropped like a stone. Distance was 20 yards. I was amazed at the amount of blood spewing out of the wound. The pellet struck right where I aimed and must've hit some kind of major artery, the pictures show why.
That was the last target I could find so I headed home to take pics of the B-3's first kills. Did I say I love this little gun?? :)
