Whisper Varmit Hunter

I just got a Whisper VH this week from Amazon. Since we are deep in snow here in Syracuse I only had a chance to take one shot out the back. I noticed the trigger took quite a bit of pull. So of course I got online and started to read about triggers when I came upon Tuna's warning about the plastic triggers. My heart sunk. I ran right over to my new gun with a magnet and sure enough it stuck to both the trigger and the safety lever. So I'm assuming I got the older version? Is it correct to apply the magnet directly to the visible portion of the trigger where your finger goes or do you need to check inside the stock somewhere? I'm hoping there is a trigger mod in my near future... Thanks.

Congrats on the new Whisper.  You checked the trigger correctly and sounds like you did in fact get one of the "older" ones,,,,which is a good thing.   Do yourself a favor and order one of Bobs triggers,,,, you simply will not believe the difference it will make.  It's extremely easy to install and will increase you accuracy by leaps and bounds as well as increase your enjoyment of the rifle.  

Another thing,,, do yourself and your rifle a big favor and DO NOT SHOOT those gold colored "PBA" pellets that probably came with your rifle.  They are much to light and can actually damage the internals of your gun.   Also make sure you do not use any "powder burner" firearm solvents to clean the barrel.  To clean the barrel all you need is some cleaning patches, a length of "weed whacker" nylon line and a bottle of "Goo-Gone" which is a citrus based cleaner available at most good hardware stores.  Clean the barrel real good and you won't have to clean it again until accuracy starts to suffer, which will take quite a bit of shooting....

Thanks Jeff.  I wish I did more reading before I bought 400 rounds of those gold plated pellets.  I can't believe they would include them if they were that bad?
I do have some Crosman Copperhead pointed and flat 7.9gr. pellets left over from the kid's Daisy pump.  Are they good rounds for this gun?

congrats on the new gun and welcome.if its anything like my big cat it took a little while to figure out what pellet it liked .it likes crosman hollow points.so it might take you awhile to figure out what your whiper likes.my big cat shoots 5 pellets into one ragged hole now at 10 yrds not to mention has really slowed the nutter population down around here.and the gamo scopes kinda suck i hope you got a better one than i did. again welcome to the forum. brian

I have to agree that Gamo PBA ammo is novelty at best but does show some good penetration in certain medias... I believe the Crosman Copperhead pellets at that weight should work as long as they are the same caliber.

Nice close-up ! Yes, that looks exactly like the  stamped steel trigger on my 22 Whisper. Swapping in a "Tuna trigger" is a must if you want to get the most out of the gun. And you'll be glad you did.

Not only may they shorten the life of the spring, the Raptors have a reputation for not wanting to go where you want them to!!!  Maybe you can return the Raptors and swap for lead pellets, or a better scope. A pellet sampler pack is a good way to go until you find what it likes, but it's also going to take at least a few hundred pellets to wear in, so don't be disapointed with results early on.

As more choices for a starting place, some Whispers  show a strong liking for the JBS Exact Jumbos in one or more of the various weights they come in.

Jim, The reason they include the PBA pellets is because they suck,....and they can't sell them,...except to newbies that get hooked on the BS idea that high velocity is the way to go.  NOT!!!!!! The next best thing you can do aside from installing the GRT-III blade is to toss the PBA's in the trash can. Try the Crosmans for a while to get the action broken in, and cycle out the residual factory lubes  for now. Clean the barrel after a few tins and then order some 'good' pellets. I see no reason to immediately clean the barrel at this stage because it will only  'dirty up' again in short order because of the lubes. Shoot the heck out of it and don't worry about pin-point accuracy until everything settles in. Jeff gave you a very good piece of advice on cleanning the barrel, but I'd still hold off until the initial break-in is performed. After that, clean it, and shot it alot to really season( light-leading) the barrel. I guarentee over time your rifle will come into its own. Just be patient and shoot often, tjk

I did forget one thing. If the rifle diesels (not detonates) alot during break in, I'd recommend a periodic dry patch or two pulled through the breech to the muzzle to remove the factory lube build up. Once the 'mist' subsides to a constant level,...or none present, then follow Jeffs recomendation with the Go-Gone!!  Happy Shooting!!!!! tjk

As for pellets what the others have told you is true,,,, each gun has it's own favorites and it may take you some time to find the best pellets for your gun.  I don't know what sporting goods stores are available to you that may carry pellets but Walmart always carries the Crosman Hollow Points (CPHP's) in .177 and they are usually a good pellet to use and start with and the best part is they're inexpensive.  Most of my shooters like the CPHP's and I use with great success for hunting squirrels and rabbits.  You may find that your gun likes them as well, but even if it doesn't at least you'll have a good supply of pellets to shoot while you break in the rifle and they are right at the perfect weight (7.9 gr) to use in your rifle.  As far as pellets go there are a ton of different pellets to chose from and as you become more addicted to air gunning you will no doubt wind up with  shelf full of varied pellets types just like the rest of us    However, since you're just starting out I would suggest that you stay away from pointed pellets and try to stay with a good simple domed pellet, like the CPHP's.....  technically their called  "hollow points" but all they really have is  small dimple in the head of the pellet so they're basically just like a domed pellet.  Pointed pellets don't tend to fly well in the faster spring guns, like the whisper, so don't waste your $ buying them.  The only guns I have that like pointed pellets are my cheap chinese shooters that shoot at much lower velocities than my regular rifles.  I know there are some "regular" rifles that do like pointed pellets, but they are in the minority.  Try to stick with a domed pellet at first until you become familiar with the different pellets and types.  RWS Superdomes, GAMO Hunters are 2 more examples of domed pellets.

Hey Jim, GREAT choice of AG and thank God you got the steel trigger!!!! Get in touch with the tuna ASAP, and drop in the GRT trigger. Literally, night and day!! I have 3 different model Whispers, all .177. All have a ton of pellets through them. All have GRT's and have been Turbo Tuned. I know I might be a little biased, but these guns are a joy to shoot, very accurate and look awesome!!! The problems I have encountered were the scopes Gamo supplied and those ridiculous pellets. Hang on to the scope till it falls apart, which won't be that long, and DO NOT use those pellets!!!!! I get my best groups with Crossman Premier Lights, JBS Exacts and Gamo Tomahawks. The guns hate any pellet that weighs under 7.5 or over 9 grains. Anything else we can help you with, don't hesitate to ask!! Enjoy that bad boy, you're gonna love it!!!! I'm sure we'll be hearing about your next purchase soon!!!!! Let us know how she works out for you bro!!!!

welcome you will find tons oj info in this site and great peeps to help....i own a whisper .22 with the air ram and at first it wasnt accurate at all..after installing the new trigger and taking hundreds of shots my whisper is very accurate...i use diablos the heavies and they shoot best for my gun....my bigest problem was trying to stop scope creep...after several changes i finally got the scope and mount that is working for me...i went through 2 scopes before putting on a center point and it seems to bee holding zero....good luck and hope you get the info you need....

Also, before you throw those gold pellets away....if you have a pump type air gun they work very good in those. I have a Daisy 880 and use them in this gun and they work very well.
 My buddy has a Crossmen and also shoots them in his gun.

Hey Adrian!

Thanks for commenting. Where do you shoot? I live next door to the 3 Rivers Wildlife Management area so I've been pretty much stuck there since I picked up my whisper this winter. Still waiting to see my first red squirrel. I'm told there in there so I still have an excuse to tote my rifle around over there.

Not sure if I mentioned it in this post, but I did get the golden trigger and it makes all the difference.
