Remington Vantage Tune...What Spring and Seal
« on: March 04, 2010, 05:30:56 AM »

I want to upgrade my Remington Vantage to a Macari spring and Seal. Can you tell me if I've found the right parts (below)? I've been through the Macari site looking for anything Remington and  there is no reference. I emailed him a few days ago and he hasn't  responded, so I'm trying to figure it out through searching/reading. Below is the spring and seal I think will work. (It's all part of the reason I like airguns...like several were writing in the "just wondering why people do things" post)

E3650 spring

Apex Seal APV65798

Doing several searches here I've found that the Vantage uses the same power plant that is in the Xisco B-18/19, Quest, Storm, Summit, and maybe (not sure) the Gamo 220/440. So I reviewed this Charlie DaTuna Doc. It's the procedure for a B-19 SuperTune. http://www.charliedatuna.com/airgun_docs/B19%20Super%20Tune.doc In this doc he used the Apex Seal APV65798.

In another post, someone suggested the E3650 spring from Macari's site for a Quest that it was the closest match to the factory spring guide.

How do you experts know what to order in situations like this?....or do you just go rummaging in your spare parts bins until you find the right size spring/seal?

Here are some pictures of the action. Hoping you will recognize it.

Tom,  have you taken apart your Remington Vantage yet?    Doing so will begin to answer many questions for you.  Such as, spring dimensions and seal type and dimensions of the seal.
It would do you alot of good to have a dial caliper that can measure to .001" .  You can then measure the ID and OD of the spring.  Also spring wire thickness.   Measure the length of the spring and count the number of coils in the spring.   By knowing these dimensiions and figures,  you may be able to select a spring that may work for you.  And a seal also.

Just a question?  Why do you want/need to " upgrade" to Maccari spring and seal??   For your first attempt at a " tune" you could order your first parts from Crosman.  This would give you some room for trial and error.  You can always order from Maccari later.    I use Crosman parts and I am quite satisfied with them.  And the price is right.    However, I do plan to try some Maccari springs and seals in the future.     Many tuners use the E-3650 in the B-19 varients.  And I believe a small seal for the piston.

The guide listed in the Library For the B-19 disassembly  is what I used my first time  lube and tune and I still refer to it. And I studied the heck out of it before I started the project.
Build a spring compressor too.
And last but not least...... I don't believe your photos are coming thruogh.  At least not for me.

That combination seal and spring will work just fine. No need for a lot of measurements as the seals a re pretty standard in all of the Gamo clones (and that is). The E-3650 spring is a little bit softer and docile and there will be a slight drop in fps but the trade off is worth it as it does produce a better firing cycle with a little less torque.  All you need to be sure of is that all is deburred good in the action so as not to damage the seal during assembly and lubed properly.

CaptZippy,  I'm with Bogey on this one. Spend the money on Macari lubes if you want, but you can get 3 springs from Crosman for the same price as one Macari spring. I think the spring is $5.70 and the seal is $3.60 from Crosman, plus $4.00 shipping. Build a spring compressor if you have not already done so. I built one using a picture of one I saw online, cost about $10 using some scrap wood I had laying around. The E3650 is the correct spring from Macari.
If you need help with the spring compressor let me know. Be safe and have fun.

Bogey: Spring compressor for sure, I like my teeth...and would like to keep em.  Hadn't thought about using Crosman parts, but if I can get the right Macari parts, I'd rather go that route.  It might be worth it to order both in case I tear a seal putting it back together.  My goal with this tune is to make is smoother and more accurate, not more powerful.  I haven't been satisfied with it's accuracy from day 1, but didn't know any better until I joined this forum and read about tunning, artillery hold, etc.... and got another springer (Gamo Whisper Delux).  The Remington is nice to look at and touch, just doesn't shoot consistently.  I like to work with my hands and tinker, so instead of getting rid of her, I'd like to try to make it better.

Charlie:  Thanks for confirming the spring and seal....as well as putting together the Super Tune doc.

Bwana, thanks for confirming the E3650. The E3650 is $17 and the Apex Seal is $8.95...not too bad.
