Interesting Sight
« on: March 13, 2010, 04:54:10 AM »
Right now we are having heavy rain and 50 mph winds,,,, to say it's nasty outside would be a severe understatement.  I just looked out into my backyard and sitting out there on the lawn  are 2 of the biggest crows I've ever seen  and about 10 yards away from the crows is the biggest rabbit I've seen in a long time.  The crows are just sitting there picking at the bird seed I put out and the rabbit is just sitting there munching on grass likes it a beautiful spring day.   Amazing  !!

When i was a kid growing up in Mississippi i would always go squirrel and rabbit hunting during a misting rain. I don't know if they feel safer or if the food they eat is more palatable during the rain, but i always saw more game in the rain...peace

Jeff,

Guess they couldn't wait to start fattening up.

No rain yet, but very high winds here last night and all day today. No critters out except Crows.

Went for a drive and saw about 9 Woodchuck holes that have fresh dirt thrown out along the roadside edges of some of the farm fields.

I wish that were the case here Jeff.  A crow has not landed on my property for several months, but I am seeing the first Grackles arriving and making their annoying mating sounds.
I shot one out of 2 on my property yesterday from 30yds out with the Condor .25 using a JSB 25.4gr.  Stopped it in its tracks (of course) as it was slowly walking and lifting up leaves looking for food.  I could see through the scope @ 18x magn. that it still had a round seed in its mouth.  But it was raining and the winds blowing @ 40-50mph so I never went outside yesterday so it became critter dinner last night because it was gone this morning.

Just south of me in Rockland and North Jersey the winds got up to 60-65mph causing power outages.  Both my brother and mother in law lost power for a few hours.  Luckily the winds never got to more than 50mph up here, averaging 35-40mph.

Oh guess what?  A squirrel has been visiting every morning around 8am for the last few days!  Hopefully they will breed well this summer so I can taste some game again in the winter :)  I doubt I will be able to ignore them for the entire season as I was thinking of doing.  I wanted to give them a break for at least a full year but I don't see that happening :)  I started getting withdrawals by just watching that one squirrel burry food in my yard these past 3-4 days, hehe.

I saw a couple of dead G-hogs by the side of the road a few blocks from here too.  I bet they were trying to make it to "Harry's famous shed motel", hehehe :)

The strong winds  finally ended here early this morning, although it's been overcast and lightly raining all day .  I spent a couple of hours today starting to clean up my property, what a mess !!  Branches and tree small tree limbs all over the place but the worst part is that the 60 mph winds   pushed so hard on the pine trees in my yard that 5 of them are now leaning at a 45 degree angle and their root balls were literally ripped from the ground.  I'll be able to save 1 of the trees but the other 4 are going to have come down  :(  I really loved those trees but there's just no way to save em.   Good thing last year I replaced the blades on my chain saws with brand new ones.  The good news is that the new shooting bench I built withstood the storm just fine and is sitting out their just waiting for me to sit down with an air rifle and shoot  :)

I have no doubt you'll have more g-hogs move into your property again this year.  There seems to be something about your property that attracts them like bugs to a lantern  :)

As for the nutters...... no doubt you'll have more of them running around as well.  I'm sure their are enough nutters in your general area to bring the population back up once they give birth.
