My first "Official" Coyote Hunt is tomorrow morning!
« on: April 01, 2010, 03:01:24 AM »
One of the local predator hunters is taking me in the morning to shoot some nuisance Coyotes that are chasing cattle.  I'm so excited to finally get to go!

Thanks to Furseeker I've now got my own "El Cheapo" Electronic Predator Call!  It works great, but I'll have to compare it to a professional one tomorrow.

I'm taking my camera stuff so I can film another edition of the Suburban Outdoorsman.  We are going down near where I was raised in Farragut.  I moved there in 1964 with my mom and dad and they still live there.  It used to be one of the best squirrel hunting areas around, but now it is all subdivisions and stores :(  I never knew or suspected there were coyotes there.  This is a good opportunity for me with my Suburban Outdoorsman idea.

One of the guys from Predator Pursuit (Cal) emailed me back with some camera information about the equipment they use for their show.  The downside is it is a HD camera and they cost over $3000!!  Since my videos are only going to be on You Tube for now, it doesn't really matter the equipment I'm going to use.  I have a Sony camera with a 99X zoom on it, and a little cheapo HD hand camera that has only a 3 x zoom.

I'll have my still camera as well and my NEW powder burner with me :)  I'll send a coyote some .223 55 grain lovin!

Yesterday I setup my turkey blind for the first day on Saturday!  I don't own a real turkey gun, but I have my old 20 gauge with some #4 high brass which I think will do the job.  I'm covered in stickers!  When I went there yesterday there were three males in the field.  I didn't see any females though, but they aren't what I'm after anyway.  I'll have the tripod and a camera for turkey too.  It is just outside the city limits of Knoxville in the suburbs so I could get two episodes in the same weekend!

My blind is under a big sycamore tree with good cover for me.  There is a big creek nearby and I've seen birds there a lot.  Now to try and figure out how to use this call.  I'm a pure amateur at hunting everything but squirrels and doves. All I've learned I've learned from the internet, outdoor tv shows, and from folks that have offered to help.  What I'm hoping to do is to pass the knowledge down to my son so he can enjoy it over his lifetime.

Good luck and have a good time tomorrow. That home made call you built will do the trick everybit as good as a Fox Pro. Take some still pics and share them with the group when you get back. I can read the excitement in your words, you won't know what to do with yourself if you hook up on a few coyotes on this hunt. I hope we don't loose airgun huntiin Randy to full time coyote huntin Randy. Good luck, have blast and be safe tomorrow.

Naw, I'm going to do mostly air gun hunting, it just isn't a good season for that right now here.  Somewhere around the May 8, the spring squirrel season starts.  After that I"m going out to Kansas to shoot the prairie dogs with the air guns and the powder burners.  I'll use the air guns for the up close shots and the powder burner for the long ones.

The coyote hunters will stop soon here too as they are raising pups.  However, these are chasing cattle and they need to be controlled.

Good luck on your first Coyote hunt.  Those .223s will put the hurt on them when they hit.

Good luck coyote hunting Randy!  Just to get you even more excited, here are some pics of a coyote I shot last week with my 6mm Rem. at 260 yards.  It's a lot of fun, you'll really enjoy it!

Well I didn't see one, but my partner ran over a hill to take a moving shot at one.  I didn't want to move because I didn't know where he was located.  We did two more stands and saw nothing.

Tomorrow I'm going to try my hand at my first turkey hunt. It can't go any worse than my first "official" coyote hunt. :D

First Turkey Hunt
« Reply #11 on: April 04, 2010, 01:01:20 AM »
Well, my brother and I went VERY early in the morning to my friend Jim's farm.  We navigated in the blackness to find my blind.  I set up my new decoys about 15 yards in front of me, then we sit down and waited.

First of all it was so nice and quiet out there!  You could hear all the birds, cows, and geese moving around.  It wasn't long until the sun slowly crept over the top of the ridge that backs Jim's property.  I was so excited when I heard gobbles all around me!  In fact I think I was shaking with excitement.  As the sun rose more however, I didn't spot any birds :(

When the sun had fully risen, my brother noted motion off to our right.  Sure enough there were about 25 birds with five big toms all strutting.  However they were nearly 300 yards away in his neighbor's field.  We "thought" we could creep out of our blind by sneaking low along the creek and up and around this wood line to get closer, but either they saw us or someone else and they took off.

I walked down afterward and found a better spot to setup for tomorrow.  I'm leaving for Florida for a few days on business but I have time to hunt early in the morning.  We'll see how I do with some better positioning.

On the good side, my brother has an extra shotgun he got from a guy that needed money.  It is a nice looking Berretta with multiple chokes.  Once I figure out how much it is worth, I'm going to buy it from him.  That will fit in nicely with my coyote and turkey hunting.

FYI, my squirrel re-stocking is a full success.  Between the new ones and the scrawny looking squirrel babies running around my backyard is going to be full for the early squirrel season.  On top of that my coyote hunting has gotten me some good places to go squirrel hunting with the air guns!  I can't wait!  I'm fattening the ones in the backyard now with sunflower seeds :)

Tried Turkey again
« Reply #13 on: April 06, 2010, 12:12:37 AM »
Well I went back today and tried again. Again they were WAY off in some other guy's fields. I didn't have time today to try and call them any closer. I have a flight to catch today to go to Florida on business.

There was one across the creek from me, but I never saw him to get a shot at him. Now I would probably never cross that creek unless I had to cross it, but a bird on the other side would have gotten me to swim it.

When I was picking up my decoys and stuff, my partner called me. I was chatting on the phone when two Jakes flew over my head and landed not 80 yards away! That was just too funny after sitting there for a couple hours and seeing everything 300 plus yards away.

I ordered a ground blind for shooting. Hopefully it will be here by the weekend. I've spotted at least a dozen toms in this one area. I'm going to sneak in closer to their roost and setup the ground blind. Hopefully I'll get one!

BTW: I have no clue what I'm doing. Sad
