Today I had to run down to the dairy and help move some equipment for the owner. I was told there were a group of squirrels raiding some seed sheds on the property. When asked if I could try to remove them I said I’d get right on it. I walked over to where they were last spotted and saw one poking around. He saw me too and ran for cover; I took up a position near a parked tractor and only had to wait a few minutes before he popped up to see if the coast was clear. I know for a fact that I hit this one solidly but by the time I made it over to where he was there was no squirrel to be found. I checked around but there were plenty of holes for him to dive into. A little while later I spotted another one while glassing another area on the farm. I headed his way to see if I could get close enough for a shot, I was able to close the distance to about 25 yards and leaned up against a gate steady myself for the shot. Not wanting this one to get away I aimed for the base of his head, the 350 Feuerkraft Pro Compact recoiled and the squirrel went straight down from the well placed shot. When I lowered the gun I couldn’t see the squirrel anymore but this one just went limp at the shot, I walked over and found him dead in his hole. I actually had to reach a few inches into the hole to retrieve my prize. Posed him for the obligatory photo session and headed back to where I shot the first one. Sure enough there was another one out digging around on the back of the silage pit. Luckily I had my trusty monopod with me and used it for a solid rest. He saw me at the last minute and ducked into the nearby tire pile for safety. Just a few minutes later I could see two little squirrel eyes peering out from his hiding spot. I gave this one extra time so feel comfortable enough to come all the way out in open, I had already ranged the spot and knew the distance to be 34 yards. When he came out far enough I put the crosshairs between eyes and his ears and touched off the shot. The pellet made sharp crack upon contacting the fuse box and this little guy just rolled up ball. I retrieved this one and set up the second photo shoot. About this time I’m feeling pretty good about going 3 for 3 in just a few minutes. I headed back to the truck and was just about to climb in when I see number 4 on the other side of the silage pit. A few minutes later I’m leaning up against a pole waiting for him to make another appearance. Just like before I see him poking his head out from the tire pile. Feeling confident I quickly lined up the shot and took the shot. This one was luckier then the others and got away with just a free haircut. I was a little bummed out about missing but I thought all in all I had a good hunt. Total time spent with rifle in hand was less then 30 minutes. Before leaving I let the operator know he had 3 less squirrels around and he was pleased to hear the news.
Oh I missed a pigeon too but it was out about 65 yards away and on the move. Enjoy the photos.
