off topic,..................but
« on: April 28, 2010, 04:36:59 AM »
hey ya'll, of all the shooting forums im a member of............... this is where i feel most at home. first off, i like old stuff.be it cars, guns, stereo, etc,.....older gear has more character, is generally simpler and it just has a feel that new products dont.

with that said,...., im posing a hypothetical build question for you......

ive been toying with building a lo-buck coyote rifle. as a basis the mosin nagants in 7.62x54 are readily available, have a decent aftermarket following and trigger groups from timney now available. shots would typically be 150 yards or less.
ballistics are decent, with ammo costs at about $150 per 440 rounds.

did a small ring mauser 98 last year, rechambered in .308 using a lathed dowm remington 700pss barrel and this year, i want to try something new.

whatre ya'lls thoughts and input ?

thanks in advance ,..jim

I have never been a fan of Soviet armament, but I have read that the Nagants were reliable shooters. With a good barrel and the Timney trigger all you will need is a good scope.

It sound like your going to have a "FUN" project ! Coyots ???

7.62, that's a big pellet !

Enjoy,

in my opinion 7.62x54 is WAY overkill for "yote" especialy at 150 or less LOL thats actually a hell of a cartrige in the 30-06 powerrange... that being said a good mosin is an excelent rifle and would make a great project!!!!! and I guess you would have plenty of rifle for that pesky yote out at 400-500 yards too if you got enough scope for it :)

Hey, Jim! Always a project, with you... I can't say much about the Moisin Nagants, but their current availability at bargain prices reminds me of a similar gun I always wanted in my youth.

Does anyone else remember when the Schmidt-Rubin Swiss army rifles were the bargain bin rage? Shotgun News and every other pub had the ads, in the two digit range... they had the really cool straight pull ring bolt and werevery well-made rifles. The K31 carbinewould have been a great hunting mod platform.

I think what stopped a lot of us back then was the "oddball" 7.5mm cartridge. It is actually a great round, but the reason I never went for one. Now, as with so many other things, I wish I had. They seem to run $250-350 these days.

lol dave poppa has an excelent axample of the swiss rifle in his cabinant :) excelent shooters and when they where made ruled the world on accuracy!

fun surplus rifles I am glad I picked up was about 11 years ago these really ugly .22's from romania(I think... might have been hungary) was coming in and was selling for like 30 bucks each at first...... I picked up 3 of them refinished one and it came out looking GREAT!and the other two will be projects for my and my boys for their first powderburners!!!(me and my oldest will prolly start working on his this winter) anyways super heavy rifled barrels very accurate little bolt action.22s they are!!!and that extra heavy rifling makes them excelent shooters for those 60 grain .22 subsonic snipers from aguila, 60 grain round (5 grains heavier then a typical .223) in a .22lr package. fun fun!!!

well guys, its kinda like this; i can buy a savage 110 in 7mm mag or .06 for about $350 from the local big5. actually a pretty good price, but then again, its an off the shelf, "nothing unique" kinda long gun.
mauser 98s are great, but then again, everyone builds a sporter on a mauser action. same with an .03
so....since mosins can be found as low as $99 ( big5 again ) i figured i'd try something different.
both ATI and richards microfit produce nice stocks, to include a tactical style stock simiiar to the m40 sniper rifles.
ballistics are very close to the .06, so the gun would be most capable of 'yotes. a few ive seen are MOA at 100 yards which is fine and dandy with me.
mainly, it would be a fun build....................once again im thinking out loud and i appreciate your input..

the aftermarket stock's are nice & will help ,but one that shoot's in at 1 m.o.a. are rare(they are military) but could be made too shoot O.K., but are you in crazfornya(there's no lead free bullet's out that I know of?), k-31 a better choice.

i have a Stevens mod 200 in .223
did some trigger smoothing
glass bedded the action, floated the barrel
recrowned it and with hand loads at 3250 fps i am hitting 1/2 in 100 yard off bench groups
i nailed a crow at 417 yards last winter and a few well over 300
this is with 55 grain nosler ballistic tips
for deer i use 60 grain nosler partitions outta her
this thing is accurate and a cheap gun to buy plastic stock but some krylon fusion does wonders
it is also a 1/9 twist whick is nice cause i can shoot varmint grenades awsome too

true, but half the fun is getting a $99 dollar rifle, especially one thats older than i am to shoot decent groups. and yes, crazyfornia or not, i'll likley be using russian ammo at $150 per 440 rds to tune it...:)

TRIRY, the moisin nagant would make a nice project,I have seen some that you could make shoot (some what) but not real acc. per say,the ammo your talking about is as corrisive as can be imgained & sure won't lend itself to the acc. part of your gun, check the chamber's of any gun you start too buy first(russia cranked this out fast during the war) & if you can find one that was made in the tula plant (triangle with a arrow in middle) buy it first and formost & a hex receiver if you can find one, the best gun builder of russia at that time or best made then, for a better nagant find one made in finland(hard too come by)& will be more for sure but they are beyond SWEET in that platform, I really would say a K-31 7.5 is the better choice as my son said above mine is very nice (got it when they first came in) acc. beyond it's intended purpose,no need of a new trigger mine break's at 21/2 to 3 lbs and they are well made, really nice gun's,ammo kind of high but it's mil. ammo even match grade & if you reload a .308 bullet work's just fine in them, mine shoot's better than even my new gun's with iron site's ,a 6" gong at 200yds is easy even standing and the action is super fast once you learn it.just my 2 cent's on it , it is your fun build after all & do have fun!!!!
