Two for the effort of one.
« on: June 29, 2007, 06:01:50 PM »
Hello all.  Great reading here as usual.

I got lucky tonight and had to share the story.

As per my usual M.O. I wandered over to Bruceland this evening around 8:45pm in search of some rabbits and shockingly found one.  I had stalked all careful and quiet like around the back end of his holy shrine (The Garage) and surprised myself with a large rabbit sitting in his gravel driveway 30 yards away.  I drew up a recently purchased, used and tuned Nitro 17 (* For those that remember me asking about a new gun suggestion awhile back I bought the RWS34 too!) with a 7.9 grain Crosman Premium Pointed and took a bead on it's head.  "Thump!" ... drop."  I was pleased to see the rabbit fall over like a dropped rock and move no more.  As I began to come out from cover to get my prize I was surprised again by yet another rabbit albeit smaller, only 10 feet from the one I'd just dropped!  It was clearly the dumber of the two as it sat in the light gray, gravel driveway saying over and over again in it's head, "I'm invisible. I'm invisible."  I backed up, reloaded with another CPP and came out just enough to see the rabbit.  I put the scope on it's head and squeezed ever so gently.  "Thump!....run."  Uh Oh!   The rabbit ran about 60' and stopped realizing that it had not been bit my a mesquito.  NOT FAR ENOUGH.  I reloaded, corrected for distance, breathed and let fly.  "Thump!...drop."

It was all over in the span of 45 seconds.

I apologize for not having pictures this time but the wife was told, " I'll be back in 5 minutes." as I expected to make my rounds from Bruceland into Kerwinia and then Garthton with nothing but exercise.  When I returned 25 minutes later to retrieve some garbage bags she knew what had happened.  To top it off, she was waiting for me to start the ritual "Friday night video."  So.....she wasn't exactly willing to wait for me to take a picture of 2 dead rabbits and a gun.

Ah well.  Good times....good times.

That was some good reading BM.
Is it just me or does it seem like it's sometimes hard to enjoy those hunts that are over so quickly?

Hey Greg,

Nice account of your night hunt ! Real good shootin also !

And I think it's neat how you name your hunting areas.

I think the smaller bunny read those t-shirts, you can run, but you'll just die tired !

So he just stayed and died ? Why be tired ?

I have been enjoying it but can see how it would greatly benefit from a lube tune.  I've decided to make that my project gun for the winter.

It's very strong at 14fpe but I've found keeping a scope on it is not easy.  I ended up re-installing a Beeman adjustable 1 piece today as it had slipped on me at the end of my shooting day.  Too bad too.  I was getting sub 1" groups with 2 different pellets when they suddenly started to rise....

I like the gun though.  It was worth the $100 I paid for it and once I tune it I'm sure it will smooth out.  I'll probably to a spring too.

Well...to be honest USNCop, most of my hunts these days are that fast.   I take a walk through my neighbor's yards and really end up walking up on rabbits.  They're just sitting somewhere eating when I show up.  I put a gun on em', pull the trigger and go collect my prize.  As I've gotten better at shooting standing they rarely take a hit and run now.  THAT I appreciate but it definately makes the night quicker.

There's only been one rabbit so far this year that's had me chase it for more than one night and I must admit he's still out there.  Probably close to 10 lbs now too.  I'm never able to get withing 40yards of him.

To date this year I've only seen 3 chipmunks and got them all and 2 squirrels and bagged them as well.   Slow year so far.

I was surprised too Bill

In all but one instance, all the other "2 fer" nights have failed because once the gun goes off the other rabbit heads for cover.   Friday night was very unusual for me and I think I was more surprised to see rabbit #2 than he was to see me.

I was just glad he stuck around for the show...hehehe.

but it's been mostly by choice.  Somewhere in my neighborhood is a squirrel with the Purple Heart.
I'm just dumbfounded how his face absorbed my pellet.  He shook his face and took off down the fence line.
He then disappeared to the east down the back fence line, leaving me standing there feeling like a complete idiot.
While he was heading east, I was trying to assimilate what just happened and the fact he was getting away!
I just didn't have time to get off a finishing shot.
