B40 Review - Chrony numbers added.
« on: July 08, 2007, 03:14:42 AM »

Well the B40 arrived today, boy most of the other air gun manufacturers could learn how to
package a gun from BAM, very nice box, see pic.

The gun is quite pretty for a "Cheap" gun. The stock is.... not bad, it's stained a dark "oak"
color andhas a few pressure marks on it, none of them large.... but not what you would expect
ona new gun.
The blue is very black and very even. Everything looks well lubed and clean.
The only annoying this it has is the cocking lever. When returning it to the clipped up position, it
likes to go skew and miss the little locating ball in the shroud, so you need to watch what you are
doing when you put it back after loading up.

I scoped it up (see pic) stole the BSA 3-9X50 off the CFX and took it out back for a shoot.
Right off the bat this gun shoots very straight.... really very straight. I haven't figured out how
to adjust the trigger yet, but it's also not bad at all.
It had no trouble in producing quarter sized groups at 25yds (see pics) The only reason any of the shots
missed was entirely my fault. I'm (as you all know by now) pretty wobbly and it was shooting exactly
were it was pointing at trigger release time.
The first group has 7 shots in it (hard to see) the second has 8 shots in it.... not bad out of the box.

I'll be up at Johns place with it tomorrow where we will put it through it's paces. I'll post a review then.
But first impressions are that this is an awesome gun.

Very nice box

7 shot group

8 shot group

Well we shot it a lot at Johns place yesterday and managed a short 5 shot string in 3 different
pellet weights for comparison.

B40 out of the box chrony readings:

FTS 8.8 gr. CPL 7.9 gr. Kodiak 10.6 gr.
FPS  FPS  FPS
1. 879.2 High 1. 899.3 Low1. 811.4
2. 873.8  2. 905.7 2. 818.4 High
3. 869.8  3. 903.3 3. 816
4. 861.5 Low 4. 907.6 High 4. 805
5. 863.9  5. 903.2 5. 804.1 Low
Vel spread 17.7 fps  Vel spread 8.3 fps  Vel spread 14.3 fps
Avg. MV 869.6  Avg. MV 903.8 Avg. MV 810.9
Avg. FPE 14.78 ft/lbs Avg. FPE 14.33 ft/lbs Avg. FPE 15.48 ft/lbs

Thanks to John for all the math and stuff

I did seem to struggle a bit to find the guns rhythm again yesterday and after John shot it
a bit he figured out that the stock screws were loose. After tightening them a bit things
did seem to come right. They weren't that loose so I'm not sure if it was just me or not.
The best group of the day was when shooting through the Chrony. All three the pellet weights
seemed to group just fine with no adjustment to aiming position. The heavy Kodiak's shot
the highest,about1" above where the FTS's and CPL'swere hitting, a bit weird since they are a
lot heavier.
John had issues cocking the gun. For some reason he managed to get it into a "half cocked"
position a few times, where it would not fire. A firm pull on the cocking lever fixed this problem.
It is a bit strange though. I guess when I figure the trigger out, I'll be able to prevent this from
happening again.
The bad stuff:
1. the cocking effort is fairly high, due to the short lever. A lube tune will / should make it a bit better.
2. The stock is FAT. Almost in the same league as the Gamo 1250. It'll need replacing ASAP.
It does shoulder very nicely though. (unlike the 1250)
3. The stock will need some "adjusting" the cut away where the cocking mechanism pulls
through, needs some meat taken off to widen the long slot.the cocking lever rubs against
it while cocking.
you can plainly see that more was taken off the "good side" than the one that rubs.
None of these issues are serious though and I still like the gun a lot.

I've been trying to determine what's the minimum to spend to get a good shooter right outa the box.  Looks like this may be it.  Not to mention high power.

I would say the B26 for less money.... it will be a good out of the box shooter mine was. Take a look here.

Great review Roald. Now I'm thinking of getting one of those "cheaper" rifles too. Good luck with her.  :emoticon:

Today I got my replacementscope back from Leapers and swapped out the BSA Deer hunter
rifle scope that I had mounted on the b40. The difference was amazing! the groups tightened up to
where at 20 yards they are almost one hole 5 shot groups.
I guess the parallax being set to 0% at 100 yds on rifle scopes doesmake a big difference. The leapers
is set at 0% 10 yds.
So now, I need 3 new scopes :D well 2I guess, the Contender's parallax is set to 15 yards, I can live with that.

Anyhow this gun now shoots as well as my 460.... John, I'll have to fetch it out to your range to give it
some more distance to try out on. But is like a new gun .... hehe!

Now all I have to hope for is that the Leapers will last....
I'll repeat this post as an update to the "Returned Leapers" thread also.

I  know after reading Silo's and PeakChick's reveiws, I just couldn't stand it no mo'! I sent Mike an email, and had him put me on the list for one of the incoming .177's, after he works his magic on it.
Now I'll just keep bouncing off the walls, and trying to decide on what scope to buy....

Hey Silo,
Very nice, thanks for the review.  Wish $ grew on trees, cause there would be a B40 coming to me in .22 pronto!  With the chrony #'s you posted, where do they sit in comparison to what BAM claimed them to be?  I wonder this because I would get the gun first in .22 caliber, and I wonder where it compares to my RWS 48 in velocity?
God Bless

Well the BAM site says 1050fps in .177 The best I got was 900+ so figure about a 150fps lie

gotta tell you, after 1500 shots, mine has settled at 920 with crosman hollow points in .177... so i dont think that would be far off if tested with hobbies, wich rub the underside of 1000fps  and occasionally jump a bit over...

Shortly after I bought my MM tuned B40 in .22, it was shooting RWS 14.5 grain Superdomes at 725 fps. About 40 fps slower than my B30-1 in .22. Also shorter overall length, and quieter.
I love mine. You can see a picture of it here.  http://www.gatewaytoairguns.com/airguns/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=21693&mid=172844#M172844

R/H pic. 2nd from bottom. The stock is actually a little too long for my arms with the buttpad installed. My plan is to shorten the length by the thickness of the pad. I'm also thinking about making an adjustable comb, or at least, an ambidextrous replacement. Had to remove the rollover comb, since I'm a lefty.

I was surprised by how good the blueing (bluing?) is on mine. Deep, dark, and smooth.
