Talon pistol stock
« on: August 13, 2007, 01:54:11 PM »
Funny I bought this can of bedliner paint and can't seem to pry it from my hands.  first thing I did was a Talon set that Steve made for me in Ash, then I was planning a new Talon gripset for a forum member when he said,"Tactical looks good to me".  So I have went and bedlinered another set of grips, or I should say a "pistol stock".  Here are some pictures "before" and "after" since the "before" pictures show the lines of the stock better.

Before:

After:

Hope "some" lucky forum member likes his new setup.

Very Very nice Dano.. The wood grain is very nice but probably would not go with the black Talon..:) The bedliner effect is great. It is tough paint and will stand more abuse than a natural wood finish. But I am surprise that you have kept your TalonSS so long but I guess the wood stock will passify you a bit longer...:) What about the butt plate?

Very nice Dano
Thanks for sharing

Buttplate on the way.  I spent a little more time in my hot garage this weekend than I intended, woke up this morning with aches and the worst headache ever.  Will need to recover a little before I go back out there.  Weather Channel said "Feels like 106F", I tend to agree.  I have a small fan that blows on me constantly while I work to keep the sawdust out of my face, but it doesn't do much for cooling a guy off:)

Thanks for the kind replies, I like this platform even if it isn't very comfortable....that's where I intend to come in.  I plan to make a few nice pieces for the Talon/Condor in trade for more airgun junk.  I really enjoy the way this platform lends itself to being creative.

Good job!! Just curious why did you paint it instead of staining it?

The last set I made to be pretty, this one I made to be "tactical".  The person I am making this for requested a tactical look, I have yet to find a tactical looking piece of walnut.  The wood I made that out of "Poplar" is not a very pretty wood to begin with, but it is easy to shape and looks just great with bedliner on it:)

Great work Dano; Although I've never seen a problem with flex; a full pistol style stock would help control it, if someone wanted to control it , if it were really there , whatever, I like it.  I saw a remote line this past weekend at Dicks sporting Goods that with a CO2 adapter on could make a very powerful air  hand cannon.  hehehe  kirby

Nopers, not trying to control flex at all.  I feel alot of the flex people talk about with this gun is caused by heavy hands, the gun doesn't just flex on its own.  I like the direction you are going with a remote tank, although I would rather see an HPA tank on the other end.  I am thinking I may need another Talon for uhm, "stock fitting" purposes:)

Thanks Ed, and I have been thinking about taking this design to the next level with a "camo job a la Ed" over the black bedliner.  Just a thought:)

But that one is MINE :-)!  Outstanding work, Dan, can't wait to get my hands (and Talon) on it.  Jason, re: stain vs. paint, I don't know if you've done much wood working, but it can be a real PITA to get a truly black stain on wood.  I've managed it with maple and waterproof black india ink, but it takes some work.  Poplar is a great choice in this sort of application, like Dan said, it's easy to work, strong, and very stable, but the grain is boring at best, and the color variations can be a real bear.  So it's almost always used as paint grade stock, or as structure in places that don't show.

David (I think) mentioned flex.  These guns do flex, but I agree, it's mostly from being heavy handed.  I get the best results if I relax and handle mine like a springer.  Dan's new grip will address one of the only 2 issues I have with mine, which is the fit of the pistol grip.  The only other thing that still bothers me a little is the long second stage trigger pull.  But I'm sure someone will come up with a mod to address it, if they haven't already.  Later.

Dave
