New Thread...post your CFX .22 velocity numbers here
« on: September 17, 2007, 10:09:37 AM »

Boy, my last thread became really long, and it was kinda hard keeping track of everything, so I decided to makea new thread, basically getting straight to what I'm looking for. If you've got some CFX .22 velocity numbers to post...please do. I'm going to post mine in a few minutes. Why am I doing this? Well I'm not the first or the last to wonder about what kinds of velocities others are seeing in their CFX .22. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of info about the .22 velocities, so I thought that this thread might becomea good resource for those who are interested. Yes, I understand that there is much more to airgunning than just velocity. Of course there is accuracy and consistency too, and to each his/her own...yadayada...but this thread I would like to see as a go to source about the velocities that people have recorded with their CFX .22, because there are some people who find this matter very interesting, and I'm one of them.

Also, lets not argue and get personal here...this is for informational and reference purposes.

Walther Falcon.25, Shadow.177, Shadow Express.22, Whisper.22, CFX.177/.22, B3AK.22, B3.177(x2), B4.22, B21.22, B26.22, Diana350M.177/.22, Beeman1073.177/.22, Hammerli Storm.22, Hammerli X2.177/.22, BeemanP1.177, P3.177, P17.177(x2), Diana5G(P5).177, Diana LP8, Browning800, BenjiHB22, Crosman1377, Marauder.22

Okay, this is a repost, but I wanted to be sure that you read it.
Here it goes.
Oh, I just wanted to point out that it looks as if your .22 is actually slightly FASTER than mine, i.e. I would stop worrying, and get down to enjoying it were I you.

Okay, I just finished re-checking all of my velocities with BOTH the .177 and the .22 Gamo CFX airguns.
I only fired a couple of "wake up" shots to start with, then I took one reading with each pellet.
Okay, on with the numbers.

.22 Muzzle Velocities:
H&N Baracuda Match (aka Beeman Kodiak) - 521
Beeman Ram Jet - 592
Beeman Crow-Magnum - 555
Beeman Silver Arrow - 608
Beeman Field Target Special - 615
RWS Super H-Point - 640
RWS Superdome - 660
JSB Predator Polymer Tip - 626
JSB Exact - 566

.177 Muzzle Velocities:
Beeman Kodiak - 687
Beeman Ram Jet - 766
Beeman Crow-Magnum - 771
Beeman Silver Ace - 774
Beeman Coated Hollow Point - 802
Gamo Magnum - 817
Gamo Rocket - 723
Gamo Tomahawk - 732
RWS Super H-Point - 891
RWS Superdome - 796
JSB Predator Polymer Tip - 768
JSB Exact - 745
Crosman Premier Ultra Magnum - 641
Crosman Premier Hollow Point - 822

Obviously, there has been some variation from my original numbers, especially with the .22.
No longer does a given pellet in .22 outrun the same type in .177, and the Baracudas are coming out approximately at the same speed as the OP is getting.
In fact, I am getting about 30fps LESS than Davee1.
My apologies for having such out of whack numbers initially, causing you so much consternation.
I DID Chrony my .22 when it was brand new, so I suspect that I _DID_ have dieseling my numbers quite a lot.
Either way, I feel far from cheated with both of my Gamos.
In fact, I think they are a tremendous bargain.
To better them significantly, I would probably have to plunk down two or three times what I gave for them with a Beeman R1, HW97, Beeman RX-2, or Air Arms TX-2000. :emoticon:

5 shots each pellet, no average just lo-hi range

RWS Hobby 700~736

B. Laser 700~724

CPHP 516~603

CPdome 698~702

G. Hunter 623~643

RWS SuperDome 632~653

Kodiak551~565

my go to pellet, in any .22 that I have, even before I measured these velocities, is the CPDome. Also notable is the huge deviation with CPHP, a pellet that does poorly in all my guns.

Thanks oldpink, much appreciated, and of course good stuff. But I could do without the reference to me being worried. That's kinda personal.

If CP's are doing around 700, sounds like your gun is fairly healthy after all.

I do wonder about the poor showing of the CPHP's, especially the low velocity...

I know, this is one of the reasons why I find thisstuff so interesting. Do you have any guns that tolerate the CPHP .22 pellet? None of my .22s like that pellet and I've got 5 of 'em. Also interesting is that my guns in .177 don't like those CPHP either. Upon quick visual inspection, one would think that the only difference between CPdome and cphp is the drillout for the hollowpoint, but maybe there's more to it than that...dunno...but it sure is neat that we can show the difference.

That's the difference between the boxed and canned Premiers.

Oddly enough, the CPHP is my pellet of choice in .22 - the regular Premier's are so stinkin' expensive (exactly twice what the .177's cost) that I can't bring myself to buy them! I have a mental block against spending more for pellets than for .22 rimfire.

The only other .22 pellets that are reasonably priced (in my opinion) are the Gamo Match and Hunters, the Crosman Wadcutters (in the plastic box), and the Daisy .22 PrecisionMax. I've had a couple of guns prefer the Gamo's, the Crosman Wadcutters generally fall behind them and NOBODY likes the Daisy's.

I don't have CPHP in .22 just yet, but I DO have them in .177, and my CFX surprised the hell out of me by clustering into groups that rival the Superdomes, Ram Jets, and Exacts.
Go figure.
However, I also notice that there were quite a few in the tin that were short shots, crushed, or slightly distorted.
My little girl's Gamo Delta break barrel indicates a wide variation in pellet seating resistance, yet even hers shoots them reasonably well.
One pellet that I really like in .177 is the Crosman Premier Ultra Magnum, which is accurate, hits like a sledge hammer, and the quality control seems considerably better, as I find almost no rejects in the tins.
Also, the UM moves well below 800fps, so leading (all Premiers are lead/antimony alloy) is not an issue, as it would be with the speedier HP, Round Nose, and Ultra Match wadcutters.
I wonder why Crosman hasn't made an Ultra Magnum in .22.

I just got some gamo hunters, but I haven't shot any other than through the chrony. So I will be checking the accuracy of those within the next few days.

I also picked up some RWS Hobbies and SuperDomes at Umarex. They have a special going on where you buy 3 tins and get a fourth for free, and the price is not bad at all. They also have wadcutters too.

The .22 CPHP's shoot great out of my RWS 350 magnum, my .22 Goldfinger, my GAMO 1250 and my Black Shadow .22

I've taken many a squirrel with the CPHP .22's and those guns,,,, tight groups and took care of business when they hit the tree rats.

The .177 version is a bit different though for me,,,,, I have a couple of guns that really like em, but most of my .177 rifles don't shoot them well enough for my hunting purposes.

Amazing. Jeff, I have 350M in both calibers, and neither one of them likes the cphp. I have no kills yet with that pellet, and they don't hit anything that I'm aimin at. The second I go to cpdomes, everything starts to happen. Aint that a kicker?

Just goes to show how different each rifle can be, but then I guess that's what makes each rifle special,,,,,,, each one is an individual  :)

Here's the results (not spectacular, BTW) of my .22 CFX Chrony:

Gamo .22 Hunters

Low: 620 fps

High: 670.5 fps

Average: 645 fps

25 shots chronied.

Oh! The Hunters are all I have left in the .22 pellets...

My CFX .177 Chrony netted 800 to 892 fps, no matter what pellet I used, except for the PBA, which netted 1023 fps.  Dug it out of the phone book, and it was barely distorted, almost new looking.  Think I'll make a necklace and bracelet for my wife, out of the remainder.  Think I'll stack them tip-to-tip, skirt-to-skirt for maximum bling (pimp) effect.  Should be good for a home-cooked meal or two...:emoticon:

Hey! Should prolly start a thread in non-productive forum and call it; "Practical Applications for PBA Ammo".

Those things are as worthless as a one legged man in a butt kicking contest...
