GRT-III tuning assistance please
« on: November 14, 2007, 08:12:46 AM »
I am new to pellet rifles and not sure if I have my trigger terms correct.   My understanding of a two stage trigger is the first stage takes up the slack until you feel some resistance which is the second stage, when you pull threw the second stage the rifle fires.  So assuming that is correct I may simply not understand the tuning necessary for the GRT-III trigger.

I installed the GRT-III trigger last night and test fired it today after lunch.   My problem is I don't feel a second stage and the first stage seem very long.   It maybe the let off for the second stage is so light that I don't detect it and pull right threw the 2nd stage.

What I would like is about a 1/4 inch first stage a slight resistance (detectable) that I can then pause and fire.

If I am doing something entirely wrong or asking for something dumb please point out the error of my ways.

If not maybe some assistance in understanding what I need to do to configure the desired trigger behavior would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Dave. It sounds like you may have adjusted it outside of it's limits. I sent you an e-mail but a quick answer to your post.

Normally you should not need to adjust it at all as each and every trigger is pre-adjusted in a Gamo trigger pack prior to shipping and most do not require any adjustment, especially in a Gamo. Adjusting the secondstage counterclockwise from it's original setting  will bring it down pretty close but the adjustment must be made in very tiny increments. That said, when adjusting either the first or second stage, each has an impact on the other adjustment.  Unless care and caution is used and the adjustiing procedure was followed, it will probably require setting up and adjusting again from scratch.

Bob,
I didn't change any of the adjustments on the GRT-III just installed in my Gamo Hunter 890S and took it out to shoot.

It sounds like from your response that the trigger maybe out of adjustment.

Should I assume that my understanding/operation of a 2stage trigger is correct?

Thanks

I talked to Dave and I think he has the problem resolved. By the way, it was out of adjustment but not his fault. It was one of those cases where the maunufacturing tolerances seemed to be off. How about it Dave... did we get it???

Bob,
I'm still trying to figure out if I've got the second stage set correctly.  You were very helpful and spent a longtime with me on the phone.

I tried adjusting it yesterday and shooting for a while and then without any further adjustments shooting again today.  I still find it something of a surprise when the rifle fires.

I was just reading/rereading the 2nd stage adjustment section of the installation instructions.  I am wondering if I've now adjusted away the 2nd stage, so I was considering trying to reset the 2nd stage adjustment screw again.   Your instructions mention 4/5 threads showing and I'm thinking that means at the front edge of the trigger blade.   I'll probably shoot it the way it is configured right now a couple more times before I attempt re-adjusting.

I do much prefer the feel of thie GRT-III trigger blade over the stamped trigger that came with the 890S.

Any other thoughts you or others may have are appreciated.

Dave

The 4-5 threads showing is in the second stage, the slotted screw, not the Allen head screw in the front of the trigger which is the first stage. The threads in question are the ones that come through in the trigger intermediate lever slot.

One other thing... are you sure that the intermediate lever is seated properly in the slot of the GRT-III and that you did remove the old adjustment screw?

There should not be a problem with setting up the GRT if it is properly installed. It's a drop in and it should function properly if installed properly, with no adjusting needed. Once installed, it can be adjusted to taste but most people don't  find it necessary.

The only other thing that I can come up with is that something inside the trigger block may be out of the ordinary.

I'm not sure what it is that is either wrong or perhaps what it is that  you expect but I suggest that you send the trigger back to me and I will send you a refund.

Bob,
I'm determined to work thru getting it properly adjusted.   I intend to keep the trigger as it has a much nicer feel than the stamped metal trigger that comes with the air rifle.

Not knowing what to expect I definately may have had unrealistic expectations.  Your product is definately of high quality and precision engineered so it's in no way a negative reflection on you.  I was very impressed with your willingness to work thru what appears to be either my unique rifle behavior or my lack of knowledge.

To answer your question the intermediate lever was seated properly in the slot on the trigger blade and I did remove the Gamo adjustment screw.  I appreciate you offer of a refund and you commitment to customer service.

Thanks Dave
