Well of course while I was waiting for the crows to show up again to feed on one of the squirrels I killed yesterday, who shows up, but another buddy of his to check out his friend. They keep coming out of the woodworks!
He came down from the tree, circled around the carcass very quickly and then went about his business looking for nuts thinking he was invincible and this would never happen to him. A min. later he climbed back up the tree again but not far, about 8ft up which was perfect because I was using a 2nd floor window and was shooting slightly down on him since my position was probably 12-13ft off the ground. He finally stopped up but he was facing away from me angled just a little. I was basically looking at his back. I decided to go for a spine shot although all I could see was a grey fur ball without a scope. He was on a small branch closer to my house about 20-21yds. A welcomed change because I don't have a scope on the 350 .22 yet, and normally I shoot them farther than that. I squeeze the trigger and I hear a big thump and the squirrel not only falls off the tree but gets knocked back away from the branch like he was pushed or thrown. He flaps like a fish out of water for only 2-3secs and it was over. Then I thought to myself, oh shoot I had loaded a Kodiak for the crows! No wonder he was knocked back and off the tree like he got hit with a bat.
Walked up and saw the pellet had struck his spine in his lower back and exited out his chest behind his arm. You can see the exit wound under his right shoulder, not a lot of blood though. The entry wound can barely be seen on his back and with the dark clouds overhead and not enough light I didn't even bother taking a pic of it because I could hardly see it. I go back inside to get my camera. I come back out 10min. later and a neighborhood dog had yesterday's squirrel in his mouth! he would drop it. I chased him around a little and finally after 15min. he dropped it on the neighbor's lawn. He then went back towards the other squirrel which was 20ft away. I had no choice but to take them both away from the area. Brought them around to the driveway near the garage where this dog knows he 's not allowed to come. That's where I took the pics. Check out the empty eye socket on the other squirrel the crows were working on this morning.
