This mornings starling hunt
« on: August 09, 2006, 09:03:37 AM »
Had no errands to do this morning so decided to head over to the duck farm and do some starling sniping. Grabbed the .22 cal black shadow, a tin of RWS Super HP's and my portable folding hunting stool and headed for the farm.  When I got there it was amazing, there were huge flocks of starlings descending on the big box feeders.  I wish I had brought my camera to post some pics of the flocks of birds, it was amazing, there were literally thousands of birds. I know that sounds like an exageration but it's not, that's how many birds were there.   Anyway, at the very back of the pens  of the duck farm there is a thin strip of woods bordering  small fresh water creek that runs through the farm property.  The feeders, and a couple of the roosting trees, were with 20 yards of the woods so I built a small blind out of some brush and tree limbs just inside the woods, set up my stool and waited.  Didn't have to wait long.  A huge flock of starlings landed in the roosting tree within 2 minutes.  I picked out a bird and bam,,, the first kill of the morning.  The entire flock took off after the shot, but within a few minutes they were back again.  There were so many birds the hardest part was picking out a target with them hopping all over the tree from branch to branch.  All the leaves in this huge tree also made it difficult to get a clear shot at times, but the shooting was constant.  The little stream running just a few feet away also gave me a nice cool little breeze to keep the heat bearable.  I sat there for about 2 hours and banged away with good success.  I took home all the birds that fell into the open pens so I could post some photos, but there were alot of birds that after being shot fell into the thick briars and wild blackberry patches surrounding my blind area so I couldn't retrieve them.  I would've stayed longer but one of the other guys who shoots at the farm showed up with his 12 guage shotgun and began shooting so the flocks became to spooky so I called it a day.

I certainly did get those birds off the table and outa site before the wife got home !!  She doesn't mind that I shoot things the only stipulation is that she never EVER has to see the poor little creatures.  I actually was using the RWS Super Hollow Points on this shoot, but I just picked up 2 tins of the Superdomes and am looking forward to giving them a try.  I bought a tin in .177 and also in .22  I had such a good time at the farm today that I'm gonna head back first thing in the morning for another round, but later in the afternoon I'm gonna test out some of my rifles with the  Superdomes in the backyard and see if they like em.

Makes me want to throw the chore list out the window. Thanks for the story.
Make sure to give us a report of the hunt and the pellet test tomorrow

I know what you mean about the chores list,,, I have a huge one stuck to the refrig. with a magnet (courtesy of the Mrs.).  I certainly will post tomorrows hunt results and the pellet experiments.
