big cat pellet flight
« on: February 22, 2008, 03:53:18 AM »
So I've got my big cat, stock filled, grt trigger placed, and now I'm getting to shooting stuff.  Right now I have my scope zeroed in to about 15 meters, that's pretty much all the space I have at the moment.  I haven't tried shooting from a steady posture, but from a shaky standing position, I get a 10 pellet group within 1.5-2 inches with an 8.4gr pellet.  My question is, once I get some room to really shoot at a distance, I plan to try hitting targets at distances of 100 yards +.  With an 8.4 gr pellet (the diablo exacts...jsb i think it was), what is the drop off if I have my scope zeroed in at 100 yards?  Like, if something is 135 yards out, how much lower will the poi be from the center of the reticle?

oh yeah, I don't have a chronograph, and don't plan to anytime soon, so I can't measure the fps of the big cat, I'm just assuming it's shooting as well as it should for a brand new gamo big cat that has been shot 200 times.

Hello Jerry,

I can tell you from my years of shooting that your question can't be answered.

Even same grain bullets, have different characteristics due to lot, manufacturer, shape and velocities, not to mention guns. Air rifles are even more delicate due to wind elevation, humidityand rifle barrel.

I would set up my range, and fire for effect on different targets at different ranges, with the pellet of your choice, and see where they hit and make notes of it. But when your lot numbers change on those pellets, so can your elevations.

Give it a try !

yeah, I thought that would be the case...I was hoping that there would be an average drop off or an estimate...but I guess I'll find out when I try it out for myself.  Thanks for the reply.

Bean, for 100 yards plus shots i would recommend getting a rimfire rifle. Or you could try a very high power tuned PCP rifle. The springer unfortunately is not the best of tools for hitting something so far out. Too much recoil. You would have to use very heavy pellets like Kodiaks or Eun JIn to have good energy left at that distance to have enough knockdown power.

My 2 cents worth!!

Enjoy your new shooter!!

I'm not looking to hunt anything at that distance...I'm not a big fan of seeing something die...I would love to hunt, but I guess I don't have the gut for it...I'm just doing it for target shooting.  If anything, I'll probably be plinking some glass bottles.

Have a go at it and post some pics or video. We would al love to see if it can be done. You will have to mount a huge scope though to get as big a picture as possible.

you got it...scope is pretty big too, 3-9x50...the magnification isn't that big, but it should do the trick.
