My crappy Gamo PT-80
« on: February 23, 2008, 04:51:33 AM »
Hey, to all you seasoned GAMO veterans.  I usually troll about through the Chinese and Crosman forums, though I look in here now and then.

I've only ever bought one product from GAMO, and it was a pretty bad experience, so I'm looking for some moral support, I guess.  My "lemon" was a PT-80 CO2 pistol, which never fired a single pellet.  Every time you pull the trigger, you hear a dull pop.  Opened up the receiver and pulled out the full magazine every time.

The pellets would have a little crescent-moon stamped on their fronts from the edge of the barrel, so obviously not aligning properly.

Is this typical?  I never sent it back (to Pyramyd Air) because I figured the shipping and the time and the hassle weren't worth it.

Everyone here seems to really like their GAMO rifles...but I have been afraid to jump into another GAMO purchase after the P-80 (once bitten, twice shy?).

So...encouraging words?
Thanks -JC

If your next Gamo purchase is a rifle, you shouldn't be too afraid. I also have a Gamo pistol (V-3) that I absolutely hate. I'm an owner of a Gamo Varmint Hunter rifle, and there's no comparing the two. They're fine shooters out of the box, but get it tricked out by Charlie and you've got a keeper.

When the .22 CFX I bought from them turned out to be a dog, they actually paid for the return shipping. The only thing it cost me was a trip to a Kinko's for FedEx dropoff.

I've had really good service from them, and I bought the PT80 on impulse, so I figured what the heck, no big loss.

Interesting side note, looking for other products, I stumbled on this at SouthSummit:
http://www.southsummit.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=2374

Look at the PT80 magazines... mine don't look like that at all!  Mine are not much deeper than a pellet, and they have a different profile from the side (where the alignment notches are, not the teeth on the front face).

Maybe GAMO put the wrong mags in?  I dunno...

I still have it, though it won't fire pellets.  Every now and then, it gets a new powerlet, because the noise it makes scares the cat out of the house for the rest of the night! :)  Comes in pretty handy at 2:30 a.m. when the hairy little bastard decides to have an early morning freak-out.

Thanks for the good buzz on the rifles.  Going to pick out my GAMO birthday present.  -JC

Since the mag has indexing tabs on it, a defective (or incorrect) mag can cause the problem you describe. Might be all that's wrong with it.

Could it be this?

Looking in the action, I notice there is no seal of any kind around the brass outlet from the valve.  Is that typical?  Maybe an o-ring never got put on?

There is definitely a recessed area in the face of the valve, and that bit of brass tube feels like it has a shallow groove cut around it...

Anyone else have a PT-80, does yours have an O-ring or other seal here?

Thanks... -JC

I've got a pt-80 that I just picked up and to answer the two questions... yes there is an o ring at the port and yes the magazine can cause a mis/no fire condition.  The oring in this case is what I'd install.  All that gas per shot is most likely backing up past the seat around the bottle's neck.  The magazine should have sharp features on both the front side and the outside where it gets actuated.  Don't let the first impression get you down.  Mine fires as fast as you can pull the trigger with out jams right up to the CO2 running out.  Now I will say it is not as accurate as a single shot, but I didn't buy it for match purposes.  Don't send the gun back to Gamo for service... You'll need seals for this eventually as all co2 guns do due to seal deformation and break down.  It's a regular service item.  Best of it to you.

Granted the pistols can't compare to the rifles, but.
I'm not sure why it is you don't send it back to Pyramyd? Especially if you're not able to use it.
I have 2 PT80's 1 regular and one Tactical and although not a great gun they always shoot and rarely jam. Probably the best pistol Gamo offers.
You really have nothing to loose. You might even like the gun

Because it's a hassle

That's why I didn't send it back.  Plus, once I had it in hand, I knew it was a poor quality gun (my first Gamo, so no preconception), and that it was never going to be "good".  I chalked it up as a lesson: "don't buy any more Gamo pistols."

Like I wrote earlier, I use it (unloaded!) to scare the cats out of the bedroom.  It sits in the top drawer of my nightstand.  After the first few months of CO2 blasts, the cats now run for the cat-door when they hear the hammer cocked, so I rarely even "fire" it.

I'll grab some O-rings at work and see if that helps.

Hey Joel,

Wondering how it's working out for you?  I've now put 500+ through mine and it's getting better without being pellet type sensitive.   It's grouping 1" shots at 15 feet.  Not bad for a short barreled co2 gun.   I think you'll like yours once the aircharge problem is gone.

Good luck,

J
