Tec, I think what you have is HVAC duct mastic. It comes in 2 types indoor, outdoor and will dry over time. The electrical duct seal is about the same consistency modeling clay, which also works well. If the only problem your having with the mastic, is that it sags, just leave your trap laying down until ready to use.

Well darn, I was all set to drink more wine and try again.

Yes, the putty is messy and has taken a while to set.  I keep the thing flat when not in use.  Putting the target in the fridge also works.  The freezer would be even better, I suspect.  But even soft, at the consistency of peanut butter, the stuff will absolutely stop pellets from either my B9 or RWS 34 at 10 yards in less than 1 in depth.  The main hassle is just that the stuff, before it cures is sticky.  And even after the surface cures, when you drill a bunch of holes into it, it gets an oozing wound.  Have to be careful not to get it on your hands, then on your gun.  The better solution would have been to buy the right kind of putty to begin with.  But this was a fairly cheap lesson as these sort of things go.

Go ahead and have some more wine and fill the box with the right stuff. In the mean time, you can take the lid off of this one and let it dry for a week, or 2. Not sure if it will still stop a pellet after it dries, so test outside first. You could also fill the box with scrap carpet, several layers thick. There are many things that will work and you have found the perfect box to try them on, after the contents have been emptied, hehe.

TimmyJ gave a product number for duct seal on another thread in this forum.  He said the bar code number was 3207680110.  Don't know if that was from Lowe's or Home Depot, though.  He used duct seal manufactured by Gardner Bender.  I'll try to post a page from the G-B catalog - might be helpful in dealing with the store help.

The duct seal I'm useing came from home depot it came in strips 1 lb each I have a trap about the size of a clip board and have 1 layer in it used 6 strips to cover the back of my trap the back is 1 inch oak and I've taken out the duct seal to clean out some pellets and flip it over that's a pain but none of the pellets have gone through it yet and I'm shooting about 10 yds with from 550 fsp to 1000 fps rifles both in 22 cal as well as 117 cal. works great next time it needs service I'll replace the duct seal with new . howie

Well, OK!!  Took a trip to both Lowe's and Home Depot, but I have about a dozen new bricks (all that was on the shelves at both stores) just waiting for a new home.  The duct seal "glop" that I put in the first trap has hardened up for about the first 1/4 to 1/2 inch depth, but after it stands up for about 30 min. or so, there is still some serious sagging going on.  Any way, I looking forward to the new woodwork.  After all, if you aren't buying new air guns, then what better to do than to "accessorize" for those you already have, right?  also, my new front rest tripod and bag arrived today.  Now all I need is one of Gene's new tables in an ambidextrous model with dual cup holders.

Sometimes I get excited when I shoot.  Don't want to tip one over!  I am getting "jiggy" with my scope tonight and plant to "Head Bop" till I drop tomorrow, as per the article in the library "The A Team Scope Set Up".  Then I hope to return my Bushnell Banner to its rightful place, atop Fraulein "Dee", and get zeroed in.
