"Gunz" Tuned Quest
« on: August 02, 2008, 01:13:41 PM »

Well I finally got all the materials together to lube/"tune" and deburr my Quest 1k.

I polished and beveled the spring ends, added two polished washers at the tophat and one at the guide end, honed the compression chamber, deburred everything, polished the piston with a new seal, did some "spacering" in the trigger group with small polished washers (and a CDT trigger of course), as well as some polishing in the trigger contact surfaces as well, ummm, replaced the plastic washers in the breech pivot with fitted grade8 5/16" washers, contoured both ends of the transfer port and polished the whole shebang, errr, and then lubed, tarred, etc. as best i could according to the internet gurus, lol. , I also cut off the goofy looking "mini-muzzle" hiding beneath the front sight(removed) and re-crowned with a roundstone on a Dremel and some polish. I also filled the hollow spring guide with foam because....i felt like it???

 ANYWAYS...

It shoots and cocks SOOOO much smoother than before, no twang, just a thunk and pellet en route!

Cocking is much smoother albeit a bit heavier i think due to the increase preload on the spring.

Not too sure yet about how all this affected my accuracy, but im still shooting ragged holes at ten meters when the shooter (me) cooperates, lol.

Now im trying to decide if i should put on a muzzle brake or leave is as-is...Pics MaYbee to come...Ok upon request:)

Okay, so where's the pics :-)?  Sounds good, now lets see what it does at 20 and 30 yards.  Your welcome for the moly, BTW.  Later.

Yes sir, thanks again Dave, it really helped!
Heres a pic of a group at about 10m. Had a flier then got 5 or 6 Destroyers in a ragged hole. Dont remember if it was six shots, it looks like it though.  This thing is still very hold sensitive, when i have a bit more time to figure out how to shoot her consistently Ill move the target a little further.
Sittin pretty. Sorry about the crappy pic quality!

Since the last post I have cut another 1/2" or so from the barrel in anticipation of a muzzlebrake.
Here are the longer distance groups yall were asking for:

Definitely an improvement over stock performance!

Hey Gunz, could you put a pic of the Dremel tool you used for the re-crown and some description of the process you used?  I have been thinking of doing this to a couple of my guns but I always afraid that I will not crown straight into the barrel (cock off to the side and reduce accuracy rather than increase accuracy.

Remember the air gun tuner's motto "At least, do no harm to the existing accuracy and power"

Thanks

Sorry, my camera is down.  The problem with the dremel method is that the round stone tends to wear quite fast and doesnt cut as slowly or precisely as i wanted it to, it jumps around a fair bit while spinning.
What i have done since then is cut another 1/2" from the barrel, this time i used the stone by hand, spining it in circles till it started to recess the crown, then i took a conical felt polishing bit and polished it with heavy then fine metal polish on hispeed(cone straight don into the muzzle) until it was uber smooth and looked "right" .  It passed the Qtip test with flying colors, i also use a toothpick and gently circle the crown with it to feel for imperfections. HTH  I dont want to tell you to do anything exact or specific since i am new to this hobby as well, i wouldnt want you to follow my advice then mess your gun up!  Good luck!
