Why are does ALL CAPS get so many people bent out of shape?

Just read a thread where the subsequent poster admonished the previous poster for SHOUTING.  Really?  Can anyone hear the ALL CAPS?  I, for one, am somewhat visually challenged and find all caps a distinct benefit, especially sitting in front of this thing for an hour.  It certainly doesn't take up much more screen space.  Where did this taboo originate?

Personally, I don't view all caps as shouting.  It's just harder for me to read.  I think that's the real kicker.

I can see it going both ways. I only use caps for a whole word if I am using the word strongly. Make any sense? Like if I say wow. it just says wow, but if I type WOW, thats a real wow.Kinda wierd, I know, but thats how I mean it when I do it.I dont think that people who type the whole post are "yelling", but a sentance or a word, to me, means he meant that shtuff he just said!

Beats me. Typing is hard enough without having to press another key to make a cap........ Seems easier to just type away and let them fall were they may. It's not like we are trying to get our book published......

It's partly because of Internet protocol, and the rest perception of the reader.

SOME BELIEVE THAT THE USING OF CAPITOL LETTERS IS SCREAMING !

I believe neither, as anyone can use these beliefs to their advantage, or against you.

For most of us, all capsIS harder to read, andDOES look as though you're shouting.

Sorry, that's just how most people read. Frankly, all caps bugs the heck out of me and probably bugs most people who read a lot.

BUT I have never seen the point of humiliating or admonishing anyone publicly, since it is not a grammar forum. I might mention it offline through email or pm, because it is a sort of forum etiquette not to cap-shout. I like English and wish everyone did. But it's not as though they were filling a PCP with oxygen....

And don't get me started on the widespread abuse of the reflexive pronouns. Makes my skin crawl to see "which" used as a conjunction.

So It was Deemed That To Use Something Other Than Natural Capitalization

All the same emoticons we use now come from there too,   :-)  was always a smile, etc...  And now that we have graphics it's easy :)

So, the all caps thing has come down from the olden days of 300 baud modems  :)

Who cares if someone writes in all CAPS? I think it's insane for someone to take it as shouting,this is an airgun forum not the PUBLIC LIBRARY,where is it written that being etiquette is mandatory,,,  Some people write as they speak,so what! I have an extremely VULGAR vocabulary,it's not easy keeping the vulgarity out of my post,I do it because there are sensetive people that would take it out of context & because I'm going into the Priest-Hood! :p

I choose to use CAPITALIZATION of characters to EMPHASIZE my feelings ! Such as WELCOME ! OR CONGRATULATIONS ! OR WOW !

I have always found screaming a waste of breath, although it has been said that I have a very LOUD voice !

I find that when every word is capitalized, it just looses its effect. :emoticon:

I still haven't seen any explanation as to why CAPS are shouting except from someones personal feelings! Can someone please explain this idiosyncracy regarding CAPS!
